Applications are invited for the above post of Consultant in General Medicine in the Internal Medicine Division, based at St Richard’s Hospital part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
General Medicine is an area that is only expected to grow in the coming years and as such we are looking to recruit a dynamic and motivated workforce to help develop and improve the services we currently offer in the Trust. This is a time of real excitement as we look to build a team that can work with our key stakeholders in developing new pathways. This role in particular would attract candidates with particular specialist interest or those keen to work solely within General Internal Medicine.
The incumbent ensures the best possible outcomes for patients whilst also contributing to improving mortality, patient experience, length of stay etc. As a team we are looking to develop further community work, and work with our system partners in developing pathways to prevent protracted hospital admissions. The post holder will work with the multi-disciplinary team and Physician colleagues across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role would be to support and develop the inpatient wards in St Richard’s Hospital. Working with colleagues at our other sites as required.
The post holder will:
· Support the GIM inpatient service, Supervising the Ward multidisciplinary team and other GIM wards where needed. Have responsibility for inpatients at University Hospital Sussex at the relevant hospital site, delivering daily ward input as needed.
· Provide appropriate cover for patients admitted under the care of another paired consultant during the absence on leave of colleagues
· Provide education to the wider MDT as part of the GIM educational program.
· There is responsibility for general professional training of the junior members of the department and contributing to the training of nurses and other staff and participating in the activities of the Postgraduate Medical Centre including Medical and Clinical Audit.
· The on-call commitment for the medical rota is 1 in 14, with 1 in 8 Saturdays and Sundays post take ward rounds worked with prospective cover.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
• The post holder will work predominantly on an in-patient General Medicine ward
• The wards are supported by very engaged nursing staff that have expertise across general medicine. They work closely with our medical team and strive to provide excellent care for our patients in keeping with our Trust’s vision of ‘Patient First’.
• The postholder will be responsible for day-to-day in-patient care and supervision of junior medical staff.
• There will be the opportunity to become a clinical and educational supervisor to help support our junior teams. In addition, we have recruited Physicians Associates and there is an excellent opportunity to help further develop these roles in a time where alternative modes of delivering in patient care are needed.
• Be an active member of the Internal Medicine Team contributing to regular departmental meetings, service development, audit and governance.
• The department has an active role in audit and audits activity and quality on an ongoing basis. We have an ongoing education programme for junior doctors, GPs and nurses.

• Engagement with yearly appraisal and revalidation

Experience / Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Basic medical degree
2. MRCP or appropriate specialist qualification
3. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
4. CCT in General (Internal) r equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
5. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
