Event Assistant (British Science Festival)
Duration: 16–20 September 2026, plus training day on Monday 14 September.
Core Hours: Hours will be assigned between 08:00–22:00 and will be confirmed on appointment.
Location: Southampton
Rate: £13.45 per hour
About the role
Event Assistants will work as part of a team of two, alongside an AV/IT Assistant, to provide customer service for festival attendees and event organisers. They will support a range of events throughout the five‑day festival.
Responsibilities
* Check tickets and record event attendees
* Respond to queries from members of the public / attendees
* Assist with audience participation activities
* Provide support to guest speakers and help the AV/IT Assistant ensure smooth running of events
* Distribute and collect event evaluation forms
* Assist with set‑up and pack‑down of venues
* Cover other roles as required, including covering breaks
User profile
Essential
* Good interpersonal skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Experience, tact and skill in dealing with the public
* Strong customer service skills
* Ability to stay calm under pressure and to solve problems proactively
* Flexibility to work practical hours
* Good level of spoken English
Desirable
* Knowledge of Southampton
* Previous experience volunteering or working at public events
* Student at University of Southampton
* Based in Southampton
