At The South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive education to students who are blind or visually impaired. Our goal is to empower our students with the skills, confidence, and independence they need to navigate life successfully, both in and outside of the classroom.
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Life Skills Instructor/Teacher to join our team. The Life Skills Instructor will teach a variety of essential life skills to students with visual impairments, helping them to gain independence, enhance their functional skills, and prepare for adult life.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement individualized and group-based life skills curriculum tailored to the needs of students who are blind or visually impaired.
* Provide instruction on daily living skills such as cooking, personal care, money management, communication skills, and community success.
* Support students in developing problem-solving and social skills in a safe, supportive environment.
* Collaborate with other educators to integrate life skills into other aspects of the student’s education.
* Adapt instructional materials and tools for accessibility, including using tactile materials, audio resources, and assistive technology.
* Monitor student progress, provide regular feedback to parents and staff, and make necessary adjustments to teaching strategies.
* Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree in education or special education
* South Dakota Teacher’s Certificate with endorsement in visual impairment and special education. (If not certified in visual impairment, must be willing to become certified within three years of employment
* Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired (preferred).
* Knowledge of life skills curriculum and teaching strategies for students with disabilities.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to adapt and innovate teaching methods using assistive technology and other tools for accessibility.
