Primary Healthcare Darlington is excited to be expanding our team by introducing a Head of Operations to our management team.
We are seeking an experienced and forward‑thinking Head of Operations to lead the delivery of services across our GP Federation. This is a senior leadership role responsible for ensuring high‑quality, safe, and efficient services that meet the needs of our practices and local population, while delivering against contractual and regulatory requirements.
Main duties of the job
Working closely with the Managing Director, Medical Director, and member practices, you will provide strong operational leadership across a diverse portfolio of primary care services. You will be responsible for driving performance against key targets and KPIs, overseeing workforce planning and service capacity, and ensuring robust governance, patient safety, and quality standards are embedded across all services.
The Head of Operations will play a central role in supporting the sustainability and growth of the Federation, leading service improvement initiatives and contributing to the development and mobilisation of new services and contracts. You will also act as a deputy to the Managing Director on operational matters, helping to shape strategic direction and strengthen collaborative working across our network.

Primary Healthcare Darlington was established in 2014 as the local GP Federation covering 11 GP Practices covering an ever‑increasing population of registered patients in Darlington, County Durham. We have a close working relationship with Darlington Primary Care Network, which commissions services and projects that PHD provides for the town. We have close links with Darlington Borough Council and local NHS Foundation Trusts and have the full support and backing of North East and North Cumbria ICB.
Working from dedicated premises close to Darlington Memorial Hospital we provide NHS, Public Health and Private Medical Services.

Job responsibilities

To lead operational delivery of all PHD services, ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently and inline with contractual requirements while supporting organisational growth.
KeyResponsibilities
* Provide operational leadership across all PHD services
* Provide service reports for the Managing Director and the board
* Liaise with our Medical Director
* Line manage senior service leads
* Ensure delivery of contractual performance targets and KPIs
* Oversee workforce deployment, rotas and capacity planning
* Monitor service performance and operational risks
* Manage their own portfolio of services as well as support two Operations Managers with theirs
* Lead operational service improvement initiatives
* Support development of new services and contractsAct as deputy to the Managing Director for operational matters
* Ensure compliance with governance, safety and quality standards
Person Specification
Experience
* Senior operational leadership experience
* Experience managing teams and service delivery
* Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills
* Ability to analyse performance data and manage improvement
* Strong communication and leadership abilities
* Experience in healthcare, primary care or NHS environments
* Experience managing commissioned services or contracts
* Experience leading organisational change or service development
Qualifications
* Degree qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent
