Main duties of the job
* To act as an ambassador for the directorate and Trust to service users of the blood transfusion service to promote and improve the quality of the service
* To act as a key member of the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC), Emergency Blood Management Group (EBMG) for the Trust and represent the Trust at Regional Transfusion Committee meetings
* To develop and maintain effective links between all clinical areas and the Blood Transfusion Department.
* To act in an advisory role and promote the safe use of blood and blood products.
* To act as a clinical supervisor and mentor to subordinate staff, as required.
* Record and investigate transfusion adverse events and near misses on behalf of the Transfusion Committee and report these as appropriate to Serious Hazards of transfusion (SHOT) / Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) via Serious Adverse Blood Reactions and Events (SABRE) and the Trust's Clinical Risk Management team
* Lead transfusion-related projects within the trust on behalf of HTT, liaising with other trust departments.
* The post holder must keep up to date with developments in transfusion practice and attend relevant local, regional and national meetings.
* Manage a rolling program of education and training for all non-laboratory staff involved in the blood transfusion processes. This includes monitoring and reporting on participation, as well as highlighting areas of concern.
* The post holder will visit other sites within Herefordshire and Powys to provide training and for audit.
Education & Qualifications
* A MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation accredited by the IBMS or equivalent postgraduate level of knowledge in blood transfusion.
* Documented evidence of Continued Professional Development.
* Evidence of leadership or management training (ILM Level 7) or equivalent experience in a transfusion or clinical area.
* Evidence of training and development qualification.
Experience
* Familiarity with Apex Pathology Information System.
* Evidence of training and development skills across a wide range of blood transfusion topics or clinical practices.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
* Ability to prioritise and manage own time.
* Ability to produce reports, policies and documentation to a high level.
* Competence in PC word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
* Ability to work accurately and efficiently under pressure.
* Ability to evaluate and act upon complex scientific and clinical information daily.
* Awareness of National Legislation and Regulatory Standards in relation to Blood Transfusion.
* Understanding of clinical, legal and ethical issues relating to blood transfusion including the Patient Blood Management (PBM) initiatives.
* Good communication skills at all levels, including with patients, relatives and fellow healthcare professionals.
* Previous experience of audit, risk management, research and development.
* Knowledge of clinical blood transfusion.
* Good understanding of budget analysis, tender processes and cost evaluation.
