Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a specialist Band 5 Occupational Therapist in the Neurology Division within stroke and neurosciences based within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

The post will rotate across hyperacute, acute stroke, and community based rehabilitation services based in SPARC at Beech Hill and includes integrated ward working, the Community Stroke Service (CSS) and neurosciences wards including critical care.

Our stroke services point of access is via a neurology assessment unit which supports rapid patient assessment and diagnosis and is co-located with a 16 bedded hyperacute service and a 28 bedded acute ward. Sheffield has an integrated stroke pathway including a 30 bedded off site rehabilitation centre and community stroke services. The neurology and neurosurgery regional wards include 90 beds covering neuro critical care, neurosurgery and neurology. Conditions seen include traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, central nervous system tumours and motor neuron disease


Main duties of the job

This post offers excellent personal and professional development opportunities within well-established services. The post holder will have opportunities to supervise students and to contribute to the development of the service. The post holder will be supported by senior staff to carry a clinical caseload, provide assessment, intervention and discharge planning utilising their clinical reasoning skills. This will include cognitive assessment, and tonal management amongst other core occupational therapy skills.

Candidates will need to demonstrate:

Experience in core areas of occupational therapy including Neurology ensuring a good basic knowledge of occupational therapy practice

Evidence of continuing personal and professional development

Effective interpersonal, communication and team working skills

Strong clinical reasoning skills in assessment and discharge planning

Knowledge of cognitive assessments and treatment planning

Therapy Services provides a number of services over 7 days (including Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a seven-day therapy roster.

Candidates must hold a full UK driving licence and access to a car as community working and domiciliary visits are a core component of this role.

Qualifications

* BsC/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
* Current HCPC registration


Experience

* Preceptorship experience in core areas of Medicine, Orthopaedics and Neurology
* Demonstrates a clear understanding of the role of acute therapy within the NHS
* Work or life experience in healthcare or teaching practical skills
* Work or life experience in organising and managing multiple tasks


Further Training

o Evidence of continuous personal & professional development
o Good basic knowledge of therapy practice for medicine, orthopaedics, neurology
