Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Porter to join our team here at Ormskirk Hospital
Responsibilities
* Patient and Equipment Transport – moving patients in beds and chairs, transporting medical equipment and furniture between departments.
* Logistics and Deliveries – transferring specimens, pharmacy boxes, and other important items throughout the hospital.
* Waste Collection – collecting various types of waste, including potentially hazardous materials.
* General Support – providing assistance and direction to patients and visitors.
* Provide a customer‑focused service to the Portering team leader and deliver an efficient and effective portering service to patients, visitors, and all wards/departments.
* Ensure the patient environment is maintained to a high standard and that safe working practices are adhered to in all aspects of environmental/hygiene management.
* Collect and deliver specimens, food, and general supply items; perform daily safety checks on delivery vehicles.
* Assist with safe patient movement, including unescorted X‑ray and ECG patients, and safe transport of bloods and specimens to laboratories.
* Maintain security, conduct regular inspections, and respond to fire alarm activations.
* Handle keys, medical gas checking, and other operational duties as required by trust policies.
* Assist with body transfers to the mortuary as appropriate; support other duties such as store and linen management, postal delivery, and car parking.
Qualifications
* Basic numeracy and literacy.
* Previous customer service experience (essential).
* Manual handling experience (desirable).
* Basic food hygiene qualification (desirable).
* Previous experience in the NHS or hospitality industry (desirable).
Skills & Knowledge
* Customer care skills, ability to prioritise, team player, empathy.
* Ability to instruct less qualified staff or students (desirable).
* Flexible approach to work duties, ability to work under pressure, good personal hygiene standards.
* Varied shift patterns over 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; weekend and bank holiday working.
* Able to drive.
Working Conditions
Permanent, full‑time contract – Band 2 – Salary: £24,465 a year. Duties include operating within a 24‑hour shift pattern with weekend and bank holiday availability. Employer requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
