The Head of PMO will be responsible for the Professional Services Portfolio Management Office. The post holder will demonstrate practical leadership experience and/or managing/matrix managing teams and be a key analytical leader in the business.
The successful candidate will have strong data scientist skills and be highly analytical, capable of interrogating large datasets to extract performance insights and inform the future trajectory of our portfolio. They will be proficient in Excel (including pivot tables), experienced in writing Power BI reports, and ideally familiar with Precursive.
This role requires working closely with key stakeholders across the organization, often at Director level, to provide actionable insights, performance reports, and predictive analytics supporting strategic delivery objectives and continuous improvement.
They will be an excellent communicator, confident in engaging senior leadership, and capable of translating complex data into meaningful business information. The ideal candidate will be pragmatic, delivery-focused, and a strong advocate for best practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Management of the Portfolio Management Office (PMO).
* Line management of the PMO Team, including 3 Project Support Officers (PSO).
* Work with approximately 30 Portfolio Project Managers and provide governance oversight of project delivery, transitioning in H1 2025.
* Create and manage best practice PMO processes and controls.
* Support, develop, and train PSOs regarding processes and tools.
* Create high-quality data analytic reports and dashboards for board and executive-level reporting.
* Develop regular utilization and project performance reports to ensure delivery success and resource efficiency.
* Prepare board-level reports and detailed minutes, actions, and decisions.
* Implement and improve project management processes and controls.
* Ensure data quality standards are maintained across the team.
* Manage stakeholder expectations and communication effectively.
* Handle financial responsibilities, including collating and reviewing portfolio finances, challenging variances, and reporting discrepancies.
* Manage portfolio risks and issues.
* Track and manage portfolio dependencies.
* Plan resources and identify constraints across the portfolio.
* Track inflight and backlog projects, ensuring milestones are met.
* Identify opportunities and score prioritization collaboratively with Programme Leads.
* Oversee project closure processes and documentation compliance.
* Analyze change request trends and provide early warning insights.
* Conduct lessons learned reviews to identify themes and trends.
* Track benefits realization across programmes and projects.
Requirements
* Minimum 5 years’ experience as a PMO Manager or similar leadership role within a mid/large corporate PMO.
* Experience in resource management, RAID management, change control, and benefits realization.
* Financial planning and performance analysis skills.
* Proactive, flexible, capable of team collaboration and independent work.
Essential Skills
* Project Management qualification - Prince2
* Proficiency in Power BI
* Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables
Desirable Skills
* Agile project qualifications (e.g., APM Agile Foundation, SAFe)
* Power BI dashboarding and reporting at an executive level
* Experience with Precursive
Skills Required
* Proven ability to manage programmes/projects with multiple teams within a formal methodology
* Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
* Experience with commercial frameworks and working with third parties
* High-level analytical and reporting skills with strong planning and organizational capabilities
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including at senior/executive level
* Experience working with geographically distributed teams
* Understanding of matrix management structures
