About the role
A highly experienced risk professional who leads risk management across complex major projects or a portfolio of schemes. They provide authoritative expertise in identifying, assessing, mitigating, and communicating risks, ensuring robust decision-making, value protection, and compliance with business and RISK standards.
They strengthen organisational risk maturity by facilitating high-quality workshops,
coaching project teams, challenging assumptions, and embedding best-practice
techniques across disciplines.
They act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and clients, ensuring risks and
opportunities are proactively managed and escalated. Typically, they will be
professionally accredited in risk management (e.g., APM Risk Practitioner, IRM
certification) and will maintain their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
What you'll be doing
Governance
* Applies strong professional judgement to ensure consistent and effective risk
management across all projects.
* Ensures clear escalation, transparency, and accurate representation of risk
exposure.
Risk Leadership & Delivery
* Leads risk management across multiple schemes, ensuring high-quality
identification, assessment, and mitigation of risks and opportunities.
* Provides expert advice to project leadership to protect programme, cost, safety,
and commercial outcomes.
* Reviews and assures risk information for clarity, completeness, and realistic
impact assessments.
Workshops & Analysis
* Plans and facilitates structured risk workshops (tender, mobilisation, monthly
reviews, deep dives).
* Ensures outputs translate into clear actions and meaningful movement on risk
exposure.
* Supports quantitative and qualitative analysis to inform decision-making.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
* Acts as the primary risk contact for clients and partners, ensuring aligned
understanding of exposure, movement, and mitigation plans.
* Supports change, forecasting, and commercial discussions by providing
risk-based insight.
Supply Chain & External Interfaces
* Reviews risk inputs from subcontractors and suppliers and challenges
assumptions where required.
* Supports tender reviews by evaluating risk allocations, constraints, and
uncertainties.
Reporting & Insight
* Produces concise, accurate portfolio-level risk reporting including key trends,
emerging risks, and progress on mitigations.
* Highlights threats and opportunities that influence programme and budget.
People & Capability
* Coaches and mentors project teams to strengthen risk understanding and
behaviours.
* Supports development of less experienced risk practitioners where applicable.
Who we're looking for
* Proven experience delivering effective risk management across major or
multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
* Strong understanding of core risk management principles (cause–event–
consequence, controls vs actions, impact and probability).
* Demonstrated ability to facilitate structured risk workshops and drive clear,
actionable outcomes.
* Ability to interpret and communicate risk insights and trends to senior
stakeholders.
* Experience working collaboratively with commercial, planning, engineering, and
delivery teams.
* Proficient with recognised risk tools and systems.
