Teaching Personnel are working in partnership with a specialist SEMH provision in the Wigan borough, supporting pupils aged 13–21 who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, often alongside additional learning difficulties. We are currently recruiting for a Functional Skills Tutor to deliver Maths, English, and Science to small groups of students in a calm and supportive environment.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) who is passionate about alternative education and wants to help students develop core academic skills in a setting tailored to their emotional and social needs. The ideal candidate will be confident in differentiating lessons, managing behaviour in a positive and trauma-informed way, and building strong relationships with pupils.
Role Overview:
* Deliver Functional Skills qualifications in Maths, English, and Science
* Support learners aged 13–21 with complex needs and low academic confidence
* Adapt teaching approaches to meet individual EHCP targets and learning styles
* Work closely with support staff and senior leaders to monitor progress
* Foster a nurturing classroom environment where students feel safe and encouraged
Requirements:
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – Essential
* Experience working in SEN/SEMH or alternative provision settings is highly desirable
* Strong subject knowledge in Maths, English and/or Science (Functional Skills level)
* Ability to engage hard-to-reach learners and manage behaviour effectively
* A calm, resilient, and compassionate approach to teaching

* Start date: September 2025
* Working days: Monday–Thursday (school closed Fridays)
* Pay: Dependent on experience
