Historic England are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. They champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them. We are looking for candidates from any educational discipline who are passionate about history, enjoy finding out about archaeology or would love to gain some hands on experience. Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join them as a Historic Research Intern. This a full-time 8 week Emerging Talent Programme internship. You will receive £454 per week bursary. You will be offered hybrid working where you are based in the York office and from home. Target Start Date: July 2025 Emerging Talent Programme Historic England’s Emerging Talent Programme provides opportunities to those underrepresented in the heritage sector. These training internships are for young people aged 18 to 30 years old across three audiences: Black, Asian, or ethnic minorities Disabled people People who are disadvantaged by their social and/or economic background or circumstances Purpose of the Internship You will assist with a Listing project addressing a number of applications to list First World War Memorials in Kirklees. The internship will sit within the North East and Yorkshire Business Team, working closely with the Listing Co-ordinators and Listing Advisers. There will be opportunities to learn about other areas of work within the region, including Development Advice, grants, and partnership working. What you will be doing Compiling a project record with basic details of each war memorial, photographs and a web link Undertaking desk-based research into a number of war memorials, looking at online resources such as searching library catalogues for relevant information, checking the Pevsner Architectural Guides, and looking for articles and information in the British Newspaper Archive and War Memorials Online. Formally notifying landowners and stakeholders about the Listing applications Visiting site with a Listing Advisor to make an initial assessment of a number of the war memorials If time allows, drafting a consultation report for one of the applications. Once you have completed your Emerging Talent Internship you will be eligible to apply for a 6 month Step-Up placement. These are paid training roles, based within a team for six months full time (part time will be considered). They are specifically targeted for people who have undertaken one of our Emerging Talent Internships over the summer, either this year, or in a previous year. These placements are designed to give you that “step up” into a longer paid work in the heritage sector. They will also help you develop your essential skills, improving your employability. Events and meetings Historic England will be hosting a Welcome Event for all Emerging Talent Programme in their London office on 31 July 2025. The intern will be invited to attend Listing and Business Management team meetings, as well as other regional meetings to find out more about the work of Historic England in the north. There will be opportunities for shadowing, site visits and training to enhance their learning about the protection of heritage assets in England, the work of other teams in the region and the local planning authority.
