Job summary

We are offering a rewarding and challenging role within our Community Dietetic Service. This experienced, friendly and supportive team includes 21 Dietitians and Dietetic Support workers. Our clinical areas include home enteral feeds, community hospital inpatients and outpatients. You will be based initially in the outpatients team. Newly qualified dietitians will be supported to complete a preceptorship programme. We also work closely with the acute dietetic team at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, providing the opportunity for shadowing and learning from our specialist colleagues.


Key responsibilities

* Provide a flexible and comprehensive dietetic service in a variety of areas, which may include outpatient clinics, home visits, group education for patients and staff, and inpatients.
* Travel to clinics and people\'s homes in remote locations around the county; there will also be a component of home working and virtual/telephone consultations.
* Participate in service development projects, research and audits.
* Support the training of student dietitians and assistant practitioners as appropriate.
* Contribute to shadowing and learning with colleagues and cross-site collaboration.


Working arrangements

The department supports training and development; opportunities exist to engage with shadowing and collaboration with the acute dietetic team. Applications are welcome from newly qualifying dietitians awaiting HCPC registration.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

* Provide a dietetic service to general outpatient clinics and see patients in their own homes or in nursing/residential homes if needed.
* Provide dietetic advice to patients and/or carers, considering social, emotional, psychological and cultural needs.
* Perform nutritional assessment and dietetic intervention, incorporating biochemical and pharmacological review, anthropometry, clinical condition and other physical parameters.
* Ensure appropriate treatment, monitoring and review of patients' dietary needs, involving other agencies when indicated.
* Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team through ward rounds, case conferences, discharge planning meetings and team meetings as appropriate.
* Recommend the prescription of nutritional supplements and enteral feeds to doctors, and arrange monitoring.
* Prescribe nutritional supplements for inpatients within Trust guidelines.
* Be trained in the use of enteral feeding pumps and equipment; advise nursing staff, patients and carers.

Professional Responsibilities

* Undertake an annual appraisal and personal development review.
* Ensure practice is up to date and evidence-based; demonstrate awareness of current research through teaching and peer review.
* Produce evidence-based resources for patients and healthcare professionals.
* Provide teaching and education sessions to medical, nursing and catering staff.
* Participate in the training of student Dietitians (after an initial settling-in period).
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records; communicate outcomes through letters and reports.
* Work per standards of the British Dietetic Association and the Health Professions Council; be legally and professionally accountable for own work.
* Participate in departmental and clinical audit and liaise with catering staff regarding patient dietary needs.
* Support team members, provide cover in their absence, and mentor new staff as required.
* Contribute to the education and assessment of student Dietitians; attend department meetings and study days.
* Engage in regular clinical supervision (weekly or monthly as needed) with Band 6/7 Dietitian.
* Input data onto the in-house dietetic management system and generate reports per department guidelines.


Person specification

Qualifications

* Essential: BSc Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent
* Essential: Current HCPC registration in Dietetics (or pending)
* Desirable: Member of the British Dietetic Association

Skills, abilities and knowledge

* Essential: Good clinical knowledge in general dietetics; good communication and organisational skills; good time management and ability to prioritise workload.
* Essential: Ability to reflect and appraise own performance.
* Desirable: Good teaching and presentation skills; ability to deal with distressed patients, relatives, carers and staff; computer literacy.

Personal attributes / behaviours

* Essential: Evidence of commitment to lifelong learning; effective role model consistent with the Trust Behaviour Framework.
* Desirable: Ability to use own initiative.

Other

* Essential: Ability to work flexibly with the Dietetic department; holds a full UK driving licence and has access to a car.
