Locum Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology

This is a replacement post within the current Obstetric and Gynaecological service in the South West acute hospital. The successful candidate will join a team of five other motivated consultants who provide on-call cover in addition to a range of outpatient and inpatient obstetric and gynaecological services. These include Colposcopy, Urodynamics, Early pregnancy and Outpatient Hysteroscopy within the southern sector of the Western Trust.These services are provided between two sites: The South West Acute Hospital (main site) and the Omagh Hospital and patient care complex (OHPCC) which provides a full range of outpatient services including day surgery. At present the whole time, equivalent Obstetricians/Gynaecologists operate a 1:6 ‘on-call’ rota with a pro rota prospective cover arrangement. The unit facilitates approximately 1300 births per year. The consultant team are supported by Junior Medical staff consisting of 8 Specialty doctors and 6 lower tier Doctors including trainees. Job sharing applicants will be considered.


Responsibilities

* The post holder will share the responsibility for all Inpatient (at SWAH site), outpatient and day case services at both sites.Participate in the ‘On-call’ rota with the other Consultant Obstetricians/Gynaecologists as detailed above.
* Will develop a special interest session suitable for and appropriate to the needs of the unit.
* The post holder when rostered for labour ward will not cover any other clinical sessions.
* Provide advice to the Director of Women and Children’s Services in the Western Trust via the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director on all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
* Responsible to the Medical Director for the maintenance of personal professional standards.
* Participate in risk management and the clinical and corporate governance structures within the Western Trust. (including complaints procedures).
* Set out a clear work plan for Junior Medical staff and provide appropriate supervision at all times.
* Participate in the teaching and development and assessment of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate medical staff.
* Participate when required in Maternity Services Liaison Committee or on any other consumer forum, which may develop.
* The post holder will be a member of the Trust Medical Staff Committee.
* The post holder will work as part of a wider clinical network, particularly in relation to the management of cancer cases with the Cancer Centre and Cancer Unit. We are part of the Gynae cancer unit in Altnagelvin through the MDM meetings.
* The Obstetric/Gynae consultant will contribute to protocols and systems for setting and monitoring standards of care, reviewing effectiveness and efficiency of practise in light of available evidence and recommended guidelines.
* The Obstetric/Gynae consultant will contribute to the development and implementation of systems that measure the level of services providing ‘best practice’ standards offered by the Trust.
* The Obstetric/Gynae consultant will participate in medical and clinical audit activities and apply the results to improve the service. A yearly programme identifying priorities for audit will be agreed.
* Work with consultant colleagues, Clinical Services Manager, Senior Midwifery/Nursing staff and others in formulation/updating policy guidelines and initiatives to develop and enhance services within the Trust.
* Contribute to the Clinical Governance agenda within the Directorate.
* Report complaints, incidents and accidents in accordance with Trust Procedures, having taken prompt and appropriate action and be prepared to assist in the complaints process.
* Undertake administrative duties associated with patient care to ensure arrangements are in place to meet quality standards for appointments and discharge procedures etc within contracts.
* Take part in annual appraisal and revalidation as required by the GMC.


Skills and Qualifications

* Hold or be eligible for Full General Medical Council (London) registration with a Licence to Practise and ideally be on the Specialist Register.
* Have clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant Specialty.
* Hold current full driving licence which is valid for use in UK and have access to car on appointment or have access to form of transport approved by Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post and meet the on-call commitments.
* This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.
