Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Power Unit Integration (PUI) group, contributing to the design and development of assemblies that connect and package the power unit within the F1 car.
Collaborating with the Group Principal and Head of Powertrain, you will take ownership of various subassemblies within the PUI group, delivering high-quality designs that balance performance, manufacturability, and serviceability. Your work will focus on composite and mechanical components, including radiator ducts, surfaces, enclosures, and tooling for large composite assemblies, ensuring seamless integration with surrounding systems.
About You
You’re an experienced mechanical designer with a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals and a proven track record of working with composite components. You have hands-on experience creating composite ducts, fairings, or bodywork assemblies, ideally gained in motorsport, aerospace, or other high-performance engineering environments.
Your background includes familiarity with tooling design, composite layup processes, and modern assembly methods, including bonded joints and inserts.
You’re highly proficient in 3D CAD, ideally Siemens NX, though you’re comfortable adapting quickly to new software and workflows. You thrive when managing a varied workload, confidently balancing immediate priorities with long-term project objectives. You bring a proactive mindset to problem-solving and a passion for innovation, precision, and continual improvement—traits that drive you to deliver exceptional engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
* Leading concept through to detailed design of mechanical and composite assemblies across the power unit installation, including ducts, covers, housings, and interfaces to cooling and chassis systems.
* Developing composite surface geometry, tooling, and bonded interfaces, ensuring manufacturability and robust assembly alignment.
* Producing 3D CAD models and detailed drawings, maintaining design intent through manufacturing and assembly stages.
* Performing background stress, stiffness, and sizing calculations to support design justification.
* Conducting design reviews independently or alongside the Principal Engineer and Head of Department.
* Taking end-to-end ownership of assigned subassemblies — from initial concept and prototype build through to testing, race operation, and continuous improvement.
* Supporting manufacturing and production teams with tooling design, material choices, and process feedback to enhance quality and efficiency.
* Contributing to fault analysis and issue resolution, ensuring durability and integration targets are met.
* Reviewing detailed drawings and checking designs against specifications, competitor benchmarks, and internal best practices.
* Mentoring and guiding junior engineers, sharing experience in composite and mechanical design best practices.
