The Role
We are seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join a high-performing manufacturing site in Cramlington, Northumberland. This is a site-based, Monday–Friday role within a highly regulated chemical / pharmaceutical environment.
In this position, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of process plant activities, supporting a robust process safety management system and contributing to major hazard risk reduction.
You will work closely with engineering, operations, and EHS teams to provide technical expertise, risk assessment leadership, and regulatory compliance support.
Key Responsibilities
* Support compliance with COMAH 2015, DSEAR, ATEX, and process safety management systems
* Contribute to the development and updating of COMAH Safety Reports
* Participate in and help lead process hazard analysis (HAZID, HAZOP, HAZ 0–7)
* Support advanced risk assessment techniques, including:
* LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis)
* SIL (Safety Integrity Level) assessments
* QRA (Quantitative Risk Assessment)
* OBRA (Occupied Buildings Risk Assessment)
* Provide safety input into equipment selection, installation, maintenance, and operation
* Monitor and manage Hazardous Substances Consent (HSC) compliance
* Develop and review process safety procedures and documentation
* Support emergency response planning and pre-incident planning activity
* Conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations
* Represent EHS in engineering projects, design reviews, and plant modifications
Ideal Candidate
* Degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline
* Understanding of major hazard regulations (COMAH, DSEAR)
* Experience or exposure to manufacturing, chemical, or pharmaceutical environments
* Knowledge of process hazard analysis and risk assessment methodologies
* Able to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
* Strong organisation and time management abilities
* Competent with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Desirable:
* NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma or similar safety qualification
* Working towards or holding chartered status
* Experience supporting regulatory submissions or inspections
