Prescribing Support Pharmacy Technician
Location: NHS Lothian Pharmacy & Medicines Service – Primary Care Pharmacy Central Services, Allermuir Health Centre Position: Band 5 | 1.0 wte | 36 hours – Permanent

Role Overview
The successful candidate will work in the Central Services Team, providing a range of supporting services to practice‑based pharmacy teams across 121 GP practices and 180 community pharmacies. Key activities include prescribing data reporting and analysis, management of medicine shortages, maintenance of prescribing IT systems such as Scriptswitch, and authorisation of community pharmacies for the procurement of unlicensed medicines. This role will also involve training and supervising other members of Central Services and the wider primary care pharmacy team.
Responsibilities
* Prepare prescribing data reports and conduct analytical assessments.
* Manage medicine shortages, coordinating with NHS Lothian pharmacy services and external suppliers.
* Maintain and support prescribing IT systems, particularly Scriptswitch.
* Authorise community pharmacies for the procurement of unlicensed medicines.
* Contribute to Specials and the Prescribing Efficiency and Analysis Technical (PEAT) team.
* Support the development and application of high‑quality, safe, cost‑effective, evidence‑based prescribing practices.
* Collaborate with practice‑based pharmacy colleagues, community pharmacy teams, GPs, other practice staff, and multidisciplinary team members.
* Provide training and supervision to Central Services staff and the broader primary care pharmacy workforce.
Qualifications
* Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Pharmacy Services Development and Management or equivalent professional experience. Candidates without the HNC must provide a completed Mapping Assessment Form and a supporting Portfolio of Evidence.
* Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* Excellent communication, IT, and organisational skills.
* Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Enhanced Protection from Violence Scheme (PVG) membership for the required regulatory group (child and/or adult), or the willingness to complete the necessary Disclosure Scotland application.
