Overview

Job Summary: Applications are invited from State Registered Biomedical Scientists. Candidates will have substantial experience as a State Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry with sound scientific and technical knowledge and abilities and have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude. The department is UKAS accredited and serves a population of around 410,000 with a wider catchment area. It provides a full range of analytical services to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Cannock and Wolverhampton CCGs, producing approximately 6 million test results per year. The laboratory moved into a new state of the art laboratory in early 2013 equipped with new analysers and pre-analytical systems linked by an automated sample track. Consideration may be given to newly state registered Biomedical Scientists or students approaching state registration with Clinical Chemistry experience. Although fixed term initially, consideration will be given to convert this to permanent following completion of relevant training and participation in 24/7 out of hours rota.


Responsibilities

Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques. Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and gall stones. Investigations include, for example, liver, bone and endocrine function tests, sweat tests, therapeutic drug and diabetes monitoring and tumour marker tests. The post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for delivering a clinical technical service that supports efficient and effective patient care. They will work as part of a team on a rotational basis in all diagnostic sections of the laboratory, performing work to required standards. The department is divided into Automation and Immunoassay, Special Assay, Reception and Separation sections, each managed by a Section Leader. The post holder will rotate through the sections while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current practices within the diagnostic laboratory. Following satisfactory competency assessment, the post holder will be contactable on an emergency line and will work autonomously to provide an out-of-hours analytical Clinical Chemistry service for the Trust.

Requirements

Essential

* HCPC Registered
* Ability to work under pressure
* UK Biochemistry Laboratory Experience
* Interpretation and Validation of laboratory results
* Use of Clinical Chemistry Analysers and techniques
* Good communication skills
* UK Registration (current)
* Working a 24/7 shift roster

Desirable

* Working towards HCPC registration
* Experience of working in routine automated Biochemistry Laboratory
* Experience of working a similar shift roster


Out of Hours

Post requires being able to work on an out-of-hours 24/7 shift roster, subject to competency assessment.
