Full Job Description
It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here.
Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing - from reservoir to tap, and from sewer to treatment plant. Behind the scenes, we’re transforming how we do it, building smarter systems, stronger digital foundations, and making cloud the heart of it all.
We’re looking for a Senior Azure Cloud Engineer to help shape the platform driving our digital future - reliable, robust, and adaptable to the needs of our people and communities.
What you’ll do
This role is about much more than keeping systems up and running - it's about engineering secure, scalable, and resilient cloud solutions in Azure that power essential public services. You’ll be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimising Azure infrastructure to meet both the current operational needs and future growth of our services.
You’ll work on building and configuring Azure landing zones, setting up networking and security, and ensuring that our cloud platform adheres to best practices, ensuring it’s both reliable and ready for the future. Collaboration will be key in this role as you work closely with cross-functional teams to make sure the solutions you develop are fully integrated, aligned with business goals, and driven by a clear cloud strategy.
Additionally, you’ll drive continuous improvement across the cloud infrastructure, applying the Azure Well-Architected Framework to ensure the platform’s high performance, security, and cost-effectiveness. You’ll also play an important role in mentoring colleagues, sharing cloud best practices, and helping to raise the overall cloud maturity across the teams.
This role is key in supporting Scottish Water’s cloud-first transformation and will directly impact the development of a future-ready digital platform.
What you’ll need
We’re looking for someone with deep Azure expertise and hands-on experience with Azure DevOps. You’ll have practical knowledge in cloud adoption scenarios such as cloud-scale analytics, modern application platforms, and Azure VMware.
You’ll be comfortable working with a range of Azure and M365 technologies, such as:
* Data Factory, Stream Analytics, Logic Apps, Functions, Service Bus, Power Platform
* Infrastructure as Code (preferably Bicep) and cloud provisioning scripts
* CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and Git
Beyond technical skills, we’re looking for someone who can collaborate effectively with architects and product teams, drive improvements in cloud infrastructure, and mentor junior colleagues. The ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels and keep a customer-focused mindset is essential in this role.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events, we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our defined benefits, contribution pension scheme (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life insurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.
This role offers hybrid working - you can be based anywhere in the Central Belt, as long as you’re within commuting distance of our office hubs in Edinburgh, Dundee, Inverness, or Stepps (near Glasgow).
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on the 4th of May, 2025, and we’re aiming to do interviews during the weeks of the 12th and 19th of May.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional and will be confirmed after completing pre-employment screening, including referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted by a third party. We’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criterion. If you’re interested in this job but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from day one. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any adjustments we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Many of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We’re also aware that some might be experiencing temporary challenges due to life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally, candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything; your data will be automatically deleted.
