Overview
Role: Ward Manager on the adult eating disorders ward at Riverdale Grange Hospital. You will lead a clinical team, work within a wider hospital leadership group, and promote a culture of practice excellence and development for staff, with a focus on person-centred care and recovery.
As an independent hospital, Riverdale Grange’s 18 inpatient beds are commissioned in their entirety by NHS England. The Ward Manager will deputise for the Service Manager and ensure service delivery meets quality metrics, supports innovation, and maintains high standards of care.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a clinical team, ensuring the quality of clinical practice within your sphere of responsibility and influence.
* Provide frontline leadership, develop a culture of clinical improvement, and empower staff to improve patient care and wellbeing.
* Foster professional development, team support, and excellent standards of care; deputise for the Service Manager when required.
* Ensure efficient use of staffing and resources, manage delegated budgets, and work with the Hospital Manager and Finance Manager on financial planning.
* Promote inclusive, responsive practice, positive role modelling, and integrity to build a reputation of a desirable place to work.
* Drive safe staffing, attendance, and wellbeing, with robust supervision and appraisal processes; ensure staff training is accessible and fit for purpose.
* Support bed management, admissions, referrals, and discharge processes to optimise bed occupancy.
* Lead on clinical incident reporting, investigations, learning, and practice change; handle complaints and apply learning.
* Recruitment and retention of staff in line with values-based safer recruitment practices.
* Promote cross-provider collaboration and professional relationships with partners; maintain professional knowledge and lead clinical audits.
Role Context
This is a dynamic role within a multidisciplinary team focused on developing an Eating Disorders Centre of Excellence. The ward serves both adults and young people with NHS England commissioning for 18 beds across units. The service emphasises recovery-focused, individualised treatment guided by best practice.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
* Registered Mental Health Nurse
* Diploma or degree
* 2 years experience of Band 6
Experience:
* Significant experience in an inpatient mental health setting
* Knowledge or experience of quality improvement processes
* Experience planning and leading teams and effective team working
* Experience of contingency planning
Knowledge:
* Understanding of reducing restrictive practice agenda and contemporary mental health issues
* Knowledge of patient-focused approaches and user/carer involvement
* Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and current mental health issues
* Knowledge of clinical governance; understanding the difference between strategic, tactical and operational management
Skills:
* Ability to develop and change clinical practice with collaborative and inclusive approaches
* Ability to hold team members to account and influence a multidisciplinary team
* Analytical thinking to assess complex issues and exercise sound judgement
* Motivational skills to gain trust and respect from patients, staff and relatives
Personal Qualities:
* Clear communication; ability to influence and drive best practice
