HOMESTAY PROVIDERS WANTED
Do you want to open your home to international students visiting the UK during summer/throughout the year? Do you live in or near Huddersfield? Do you think you have the appropriate social skills, time, and accommodation?
Being a homestay provider involves hosting international students in your home while they study. It is an enjoyable and varied paid role. No previous experience is required, but a willingness to work with students and young people is.
If this sounds like the job for you, read on
Yorkshire English School is a thriving, British Council-accredited language school situated in the heart of Huddersfield, opposite the railway station, and only a five-minute walk away from the bus station and main shopping centres. Our main "Summer School" clients are students visiting the UK from both European and non-European countries. Young adults over 18, and teenagers under 18, often choose to study in the UK, especially during the summer months, and find our programme at Yorkshire English School a suitable option. It combines morning English lessons with engaging activities and excursions, both around Yorkshire and within the UK as a whole.
We are looking for suitable Homestay Providers to offer appropriate accommodation and facilities, kind-hearted friendliness with natural English conversation opportunities, and a reasonable level of supervision. We aim to meet and interview providers who might realistically meet our needs.
To ascertain your interest and suitability, we ask you to send a CV and (short) cover letter outlining how or why you think you (and your home) are a suitable fit for the role.
Please bear the following in mind when completing your cover letter:
-Firstly, and foremostly, you like young (and older) people from other countries, and you feel you can engage with people who are learning English: help, support, even nurture them, and get to know them somewhat (please note: you do not need to be their teacher)
Equally importantly, the scheme requires that:
-You agree to a responsible representative of Yorkshire English School (The Homestay Officer and/or Welfare Officer) inspecting your premises, for safety and suitability, before any students are placed, and at least every two years after that;
-English must be the language of communication within the homestay premises;
-You must be able to provide two references/referee details which explicitly indicate your suitability to work with under-18s;
-You must have, or be willing to undertake, at cost, an enhanced DBS check; please note, all adults who will be resident in the home must also possess in-date enhanced DBS checks;
-Students must be given a comfortable living environment, and must be provided with meals as agreed with YES; these must offer a well-balanced diet, taking into account any reasonable dietary requirements identified by any individual student;
-Arrangements for cleaning and laundry must be satisfactory;
-You must follow the school's procedures for resolving issues at all times;
-You must not place more than four students at one time, nor more than one who speaks the same first language as another at any one time (except by prior written agreement);
-You must not provide facilities where more than two students share the same bedroom (unless by prior written agreement);
-You must be available to receive the students on first arrival;
* You (or another responsible and vetted adult known to YES) is always present overnight and under 16s should not be left unsupervised while at home.
Hosts are generally paid between £120 and £150 per week, but this is negotiable based on the facilities you can offer.
Thank you for reading, and we look forward to meeting you soon.
NB – If you would like to discuss the role informally before applying, please feel free to call Murriam, Abbi, Gwyn, or Tim on
