Our Opportunity:
We have a number of exciting engineering Apprenticeship opportunities, working alongside our team of world-leading experts at our specialist research and testing centre at Spadeadam.
You will join us on a permanent contract during August, with your apprenticeship programme formally commencing from early September and lasting approximately 48 months. Upon completion you will be awarded the industry recognised Level 3 Gas Network Craftsperson Apprenticeship standard.
The first year of your apprenticeship will help you learn and develop critical foundation skills and knowledge around the Gas industry, engineering activities and ensuring that you always work safely. You will then move on to one of the dedicated technical pathways (listed below) for the final 36 months of your programme, where you will build the specialist knowledge and experience required to set you on course to becoming an expert:
1. Pressure Management Technician Responsible for installing, testing and maintaining the controls and systems that measure, monitor and analyse pressures and flows within the gas network. Responding to faults and taking action to restore systems to ensure the safe and efficient operation of a gas transportation network.
2. Pipelines Maintenance Technician Responsible for the testing, maintenance and protection of high-pressure gas pipelines and associated connecting plant and equipment to ensure the safe operation of pipelines and prevent damage from third parties
3. Electrical and Instrumentation Technician Responsible for installing, testing and maintaining the instrumentation, controls and systems that measure, monitor, analyse and control the performance of the gas network. Identifying faults and taking action to restore operating systems
Regardless of which pathway you choose, you will gain extensive practical experience, working on real projects alongside specialist colleagues here at Spadeadam. In addition you will also have four or five study blocks each year, where you will spend up to a fortnight away from home with our specialist Training Provider, who will equip you with additional knowledge, skills and behaviours required for your ongoing development. You will also have access to lots of online support materials and 1-2-1 sessions with your tutor to help reinforce your learning.
Don’t worry about additional travel and accommodation costs, as we cover these, but as these off-the-job learning weeks are a critical element of your development, spending time away from home may not be for everyone, so please consider whether you can make this commitment.
It is important to understand that the nature of our work means that you will regularly spend time outside, in all weather, working with our delivery teams and witnessing our tests and research first hand. The projects you will support, the environment you will work in and the people you will engage with, make this role like no other. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the opportunity to be part of making a real difference to people’s lives and the future of our planet is immense.
As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to experience working across a mixture of different projects at our world famous in Cumbria.
On our Apprenticeship programme you’ll be stretched but always supported, so don’t worry if right now a lot of what you will be doing sounds very complicated and new! You will be surrounded by people committed to helping you learn and develop and providing you with everything you need to succeed, including opportunities to embark on further training and gain specialist qualifications.
