Offer description

The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford is looking to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Mineral Physics for 3 years.

The successful post holder will be responsible for carrying out research on lower mantle phase transitions, employing Brillouin Spectroscopy in the laboratory and time-resolved Synchrotron x-ray diffraction in (dynamic) diamond-anvil cells (dDAC). A focus will be on the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in CaSiO3 perovskite, but there is the possibility to study other lower mantle phase transitions.

The post holder will have the opportunity to conduct Brillouin Spectroscopy measurements on mantle minerals in the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using a new VIPA spectrometer, with the aim to study lower mantle phase transitions and quantify their seismic signature. Performing Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments in the dDAC and taking active part in the group's other synchrotron experiments is also a critical part of this role.

About you

You will hold, or be close to the completion of, a relevant PhD/DPhil together with relevant experience.

You will have experience in experimental high-pressure and/or high-temperature research, ideally with Synchrotron XRD and/or optical spectroscopy. Possessing sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes.

Having the ability to work independently and manage your own academic research and associated activities is key to this role. Along with having excellent communication skills including having the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results and have confidence to represent the research group at meetings.

The deadline for applications is midday 19 October 2025. Interviews will be held on week commencing 03 November 2025.

You will be required to upload a CV and a Supporting Statement as part of your application. Please do not attach any manuscripts, papers, transcripts, mark sheets or certificates as these will not be considered as part of your application.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority candidates, who are under-represented in research posts in the Department.
