Introduction
Shoal Group is based in Butterfield Business Park, Luton, with additional sites in Tetbury, Gloucestershire (Specialist Wiring Accessories ‘SWA’) and a manufacturing facility in Plymouth (Birch Valley Plastics). We are a leading distributor of high-quality flexible and specialist cables, cable management, identification, termination, fastenings, fixings, and tools for the electrical and construction industries. We represent both in-house and market-leading brands, with wide-ranging approvals, supplied directly to UK OEMs, panel builders, electrical and rail contractors, and indirectly through wholesaler channels. We are also growing our export market presence.
Shoal Group generates annual revenues of approximately £45 million, employs 190 team members, and is part of Diploma PLC—a FTSE 100 company with over 2,700 employees globally.
We value our people, their development, and their wellbeing. Our business is driven by long-term sustainable relationships with our customers and suppliers, underpinned by a commitment to responsible environmental practices and smarter operations.
We now require an experienced Business Development Manager to develop and grow our Contractor & Rail sales base across Shoal Group brands.

In addition to business development activities, you will receive key existing accounts to grow and further develop, ensuring continued expansion and maximisation of customer opportunities.
You will also be trained to deliver CPD-accredited training sessions to customers, adding value through knowledge-sharing and building credibility with contractor businesses. Participants will receive official accreditation upon course completion, enhancing Shoal’s trusted industry reputation.
You will collaborate closely with our Contractor & Rail Sales Manager, account managers, inside sales, and marketing teams to maximise sales opportunities across all Shoal brands.
Key Responsibilities
* Own and grow sales within a defined territory, consistently meeting and exceeding monthly, quarterly, and annual targets.
* Build strong, long-term relationships with contractors and rail clients through professional, solution-focused engagement.
* Develop and execute a focused business development plan in collaboration with the wider sales and marketing teams.
* Schedule and manage a robust field-based diary (approx. 80% field, 20% office/home).
* Maintain CRM records with accurate updates on quotes, meetings, activities, and next steps.
* Partner with inside sales colleagues to ensure consistent follow-up and conversion from quote to order.
* Negotiate pricing and service agreements intelligently with sales management support.
* Identify and communicate market trends, competitor activity, and customer feedback to inform strategy.
* Deliver CPD training to customers and support their learning with accredited certification.
* Participate in regular reporting and review with the Contractor & Rail Sales Manager.
* Adhere to Health & Safety and Quality Management procedures.
