We are currently seeking a Bid Manager to work for a major contractor to bolster a highly successful pre-construction team working on multi-discipline civil engineering tenders up to £100m.
The ideal candidate will be tasked with leading, managing, and coordinating all aspects of large-scale bids (and sometimes PQQs), ensuring that high-quality, compelling proposals are delivered to the customer in a manner consistent with the lifecycle and strategy for winning the right business.
You will need excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships across the entire supply chain. The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines is essential, as is a flexible attitude to deal with a variable and demanding workload. It is important to be a strong team player with proven experience of leading an estimating team, but also able to work on own initiative. You should be able to prepare written proposals to clients' questions to form winning bids. A strong all-round knowledge of estimating is required alongside a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages. The individual will hold a valid CSCS card, membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS, CIOB, or ICE, or be qualified through experience gained in a similar role.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Participate in the selection of realistic, achievable, profitable opportunities.
2. Formulate and agree bid & win strategies with senior management to secure profitable orders.
3. Develop relationships with the customer or their representatives to understand their requirements and develop our value proposition.
4. Establish, manage, and maintain an approved bid budget.
5. Oversee and lead the preparation, coordination, and delivery of presentations to customers to communicate our proposals effectively.
6. Attend key customer meetings and industry events (e.g., bidder open days).
7. Oversee the establishment, production, and implementation of bid management processes.
8. Develop technical expertise to differentiate the regional business from competitors.
9. Ensure technical support is provided throughout bids and delivery as required.
10. Encourage knowledge sharing across Centres of Excellence and the wider Group.
11. Provide leadership to design, development, and engineering solutions teams, ensuring effective resource allocation.
12. Lead and manage teams to work effectively with customers, optimizing value in bids and projects.
13. Support post-bid negotiations with the Delivery Unit Commercial Director.
14. Manage risks and opportunities as part of the pricing process.
15. Participate in developing the "winning strategy" including margin/profit decisions.
16. Supervise and provide commercial & technical advice to estimators.
17. Assist in preparing documentation for submission to the customer.
18. Ensure responses to customer questions/queries are timely and appropriate during/after tender process.
19. Ensure proper handover information is generated for project teams, including relevant documentation.
20. Lead, coach, and develop individuals to build high-performing teams and create a pipeline of talent.
21. Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
22. Support the delivery of the company's sustainability activities.
