Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Dorset County Hospital for a rotational Band 6 Physiotherapist.

* The senior physiotherapist is an experienced clinician who carries and independently manages a full clinical caseload. They are responsible for supervising designated members of staff within the specialist team.
* In conjunction with the Team Lead, the post holder participates in a rolling programme of education, clinical evaluation, audit and research across the speciality.
* The post holder may be required to work at any of the sites within the Trust.
* To fully participate in whatever pattern of working is required by the service in the future.
* Once deemed competent the post holder will be required to work at weekends as part of a weekend rota.
* A band 5 to 6 development programme will be considered for individuals who have the right experience with the expectation that all core rotations are completed prior to progression to a Band 6.

The successful applicant will gain experience of treating a wide variety of clinical conditions and will also develop their leadership skills by appraisal and supervision of junior staff and students. We are committed to your continued professional development and provide a structured in service training programme alongside a directed training package for each rotation. Your development will be overseen by experienced Band 7 therapists many of whom are specialists in their field.


Main duties of the job

Current Band 6 Physiotherapy 9 month rotations include:

* Respiratory (Critical Care, medical and surgical wards)
* Orthopaedics (trauma & elective)
* Acute Stroke and Neurology
* Front of House (Emergency Department and medical assessment wards)

You will be expected:

* To undertake all aspects of clinical duties and to carry a significant caseload of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with complex presentations
* To work at an enhanced level and be professionally and legally accountable for a specialised patient caseload, and decide priorities for own work area, without direct supervision.
* To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work, and the work of staff under the post holder’s supervision. This will include management of clinical risk and clinical governance.
* Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and a CPD portfolio.
* To facilitate implementation and evaluation of physiotherapy clinical outcomes within a designated pathway and monitor adherence with professional and national standards.

Essential criteria

* Degree or equivalent diploma in Physiotherapy
* Registered with the HCPC
* Undertaken a range of relevant postgraduate courses
* Undertaken clinical educators course


Desirable criteria

* Evidence of relevant managerial/leadership training
* Member of Special Interest Group
* member of CSP


Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Wide range of experience at band 5 in different specialities
* Experience of particpating in audit and EBP
* Evidence of actively particpating in in service training and MDT groups
* Evidence and ability to work collaboratively in a MDT
* Knowledge of evidenced based practice pertaining to the specialist area of Physiotherapy
* Knowledge of national guidelines and standards relevant to the specialist area of Physiotherapy
* Understanding of clinical governance and its implication for Physiotherapy
* Awareness and understanding of NHS structure, current issues and developments
* Understanding of the legal responsibilities of the profession
* Self-motivated with a clear vision of the role
* Demonstrate professional independence
* Work across sites in a flexible manner and adapt to changing environments
* Physically fit and able to comply with Trusts moving and handling guidelines, therapeutic handling
* Professional manner and appearance
* Available for on-call, weekend duties and altered working patterns where clinically appropriate


Desirable criteria

* Previous Band 6 experience
* Research experience
* Experience in managing limited resources and high workloads
* Experience of supervision and appraisal

Essential criteria

* The Ability to discuss clinical reasoning in management of complex cases
* Ability to identify and act upon adverse clinical signs
* Excellent time management skills with ability to organise, prioritse and delgate
* Ability to work effectively in a team
* Ability to communicate complex information to patients, carers and MDT
* Ability to do self directed learning
* Able to provide a high standard of clear, concise, written and verbal reports in English
* Good teaching and presentation skills
* IT skills, including using hospital data bases, word processing, excel, email and power point
* Ability to manage own stress and work in a stressful and unpredictable environment. To show empathy and fairness to give support to others


Desirable criteria

* IT skills - Ability to create and/or format data and/or complex spreadsheets using computerised systems
* Demonstrates excellent leadership ability and motivational skills
