Position Overview
We are seeking a Director of Energy & Environment to lead the division and contribute to City Science’s next phase of growth. The ideal candidate will combine strong business acumen and demonstrable people‑management skills with a passion for sustainability and engineering, and a deep understanding of the intersection between technology, data science and regional planning.
Role Responsibilities
* Drive business development (strategy and delivery) – ensure the Energy & Environment team maintains a healthy, growing pipeline of work.
* Own the overall Energy & Environment P&L, accountable to the Consulting CEO.
* Provide systematic business growth, clarity, accountability, monitoring and remedial action.
* Build and maintain relationships with key clients, partners and stakeholders for successful client engagements.
* Act as a key external representative of the company.
Leadership
* Manage engineers and consultants, fostering collaboration, innovation and impactful results.
* Ensure staff buy into the mission and have clear objectives, targets, progress and development plans.
* Mentor second‑tier management, optimising performance and skills development, supported by the People Team.
* Work as part of the Senior Management Team to exceed organisational goals.
Project Delivery
* Take overall responsibility for successful project delivery across Energy & Environment.
* Monitor milestones, budgets and quality, and plan resources.
* Ensure high customer satisfaction and initiate remedial action when needed.
* Identify, assess and mitigate business risks.
* Maintain quality control across all projects.
Thought‑Leadership and Quality Assurance
* Lead selected high‑profile projects as Project Director, providing quality assurance, technical oversight, advisory and analysis.
* Leverage advanced simulation software and data analytics to model scenarios and forecast future trends.
* Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies and best practices, driving continuous improvement.
* Provide clear thought leadership, motivating the team around technical and policy developments to support Net Zero.
What We Need
You will lead from the front, being strategic while demonstrating delivery through systematic, logical decision‑making. You will manage upward, bringing stakeholders into all decisions.
The Ideal Candidate Will Meet The Following Requirements
* Proven track record of securing and managing a growing pipeline of work.
* Successfully won new business (at least £2m revenue personally secured in the past two years).
* Experience managing a £3m+ revenue P&L and profitable project delivery.
* Director‑level commercial knowledge (contracts, legal, compliance, budgeting).
* Growth mindset.
* Expertise in Energy & Environmental engineering / Net Zero.
* Experience leading and managing Energy & Environmental engineering / Net Zero projects.
* Excellent leadership and team management; structured and logical approach.
* Experience monitoring and driving success, including staff development in a high‑performance environment.
* Ability to cultivate and maintain client relationships.
* Degree in a technical or scientific field.
* Strong understanding of urban planning, smart city technologies or related fields.
* Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving skills.
* Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
* Experience with software development teams and projects desirable.

Location: Remote with flexible working arrangements – all UK based locations considered. Flexible office collaboration spaces are available in Birmingham, Bristol, London and Exeter.
Term/Hours: Permanent, 32‑40 hours per week with flexible pattern.
Salary: Competitive, performance‑related bonus.
