Offer description

Write a short description of your company, a boilerplate of the business, service or product that you offer. Include your business idea and the target audience. This text is primarily supposed to be descriptive, not selling.

The Opportunity

Newcastle is a city with a rich literary soul, from its vibrant spoken-word scene to its historic libraries and theatres. We are seeking a creative and intellectually curious English Teacher to join a high-performing department. In this role, you will be responsible for helping students find their own voices while navigating the "greats" of the English canon—developing the critical reading, analytical writing, and oratory skills that are vital for success in the modern world.

-----------------------------------

The Department

* You will join a collaborative team that believes English is the heartbeat of the curriculum, fostering a culture of "Reading for Pleasure" alongside academic rigor.

* The department is exceptionally well-resourced, featuring a dedicated "Literacy Suite," a diverse stock of contemporary and classic texts, and integrated digital tools for collaborative essay drafting.

* We utilize a "Thematic Curriculum," linking texts across eras to explore universal ideas like power, identity, and social justice—moving seamlessly from Shakespearean tragedy to modern dystopian fiction.

* We have strong links with local cultural institutions, including Seven Stories and the Literary and Philosophical Society, offering students unique opportunities for workshops and author visits.

-----------------------------------

Core Responsibilities

1. Dynamic Text Delivery: Teaching English Language and Literature across Key Stage 3 and GCSE, with the opportunity to specialize in A-Level modules such as "Gothic Literature" or "Post-Colonial Poetry."

2. Analytical Writing: Training students to move beyond "PEE" paragraphs toward sophisticated, conceptualized responses that evaluate the writer's craft and socio-historical context.

3. Oracy & Debate: Leading classroom discussions that challenge students to articulate complex viewpoints, preparing them for the spoken language endorsement and future professional life.

4. Creative Writing: Designing "masterclasses" that help students experiment with narrative voice, structural shifts, and linguistic devices in their own original fiction and non-fiction.

5. Literacy Intervention: Implementing strategies to close the attainment gap, ensuring that every student in Newcastle has the vocabulary and comprehension skills to access the wider curriculum.

-----------------------------------

The Successful Candidate We are looking for a bibliophile who can make a 400-year-old play feel as urgent as today’s headlines. Requirements include:

* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in English Literature, Language, or a closely related Humanities field.

* Subject Passion: An extensive knowledge of both the classical canon and contemporary diverse literature.

* Classroom Charisma: The ability to lead a room with energy, fostering a safe space for students to share their interpretations of sensitive or complex themes.

* Detail-Oriented Feedback: A commitment to providing high-quality, formative feedback that helps students refine their writing style and technical accuracy.

-----------------------------------

Why Join Us?

* A school that treats English as a flagship subject, with significant investment in library resources and student literacy programs.

* Access to specialized CPD focused on "Writing for Purpose" and the latest research in cognitive load theory within the English classroom.

* The opportunity to work in a city renowned for its warmth, culture, and iconic skyline, with immediate access to the Northumberland coast and countryside.

* Excellent transport links—located within easy reach of the Tyne and Wear Metro and the A1, making it a perfect base for professionals across the North East.
