South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Registrar at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will complement our existing cohort of ST3+, Specialty and Staff Grade Doctors, supporting a team of 27 Consultant Orthopaedic surgeons working across both trust sites. The role involves assisting in trauma and elective theatres, supporting clinics, and providing cover to orthopaedic wards and front-of-house services.
The post is classed as a non-training grade; however, the department is fully committed to providing equivalent training opportunities to the post-holder with a named clinical supervisor and regular appraisals. There are excellent opportunities to be involved with departmental audit, research, and quality improvement projects. The successful candidate will gain valuable clinical experience and have the opportunity to further develop skills in trauma, elective theatres, fracture management, and clinics.
Main duties of the job
The STSFT Trauma and Orthopaedics service provides care to the populations of South Tyneside and Sunderland from two hospital sites: South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital. The department covers a wide range of orthopaedic sub-specialties, including spinal surgery and paediatrics, offering a varied case mix. The team includes Orthogeriatric specialists, Orthopaedic Practitioners, physiotherapists, Trauma Co-ordination, and Fracture Liaison services.
The successful candidate will work within a clinical governance framework, actively participating in clinical risk management, audits, and the annual appraisal process. The post is based at one of the two main hospital sites, with flexibility required to cover both. The role includes participation in the Orthopaedic on-call rota: at Sunderland Royal Hospital, this is a 1/13 resident rota, and at South Tyneside, a 1/5 non-resident rota.
