PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with other disciplines, responsible for taking new high power (kW power level) fiber laser concepts through to manufacture, helping to define the testing of systems and sub-modules and writing of assembly instructions and Bills of Materials. Designs and runs experiments and feasibility studies. Works with team of laser engineers and ensures correct controls, procedures and specifications are maintained. Considers customer requirements when designing concepts, manufacturing and testing new lasers. Define and maintain project plans, provide regular progress reports and disseminate information on new developments to the team. Ensures documentation captures assembly instructions, and testing instructions. Liaises with purchasing to secure cost-effective manufacturing solutions and ensures delivery of effective solutions within timeframes. Raising, responding to and implementing engineering change requests. Works to continuously improve product design, production and cost efficiency. Responsible for keeping up with changing market trends and technologies.

LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS
Responsible for implementing and managing organisational goals and objectives. Reports on progress of initiatives. Works with team and monitors performance to plan. Mentoring and training of engineering technicians as required Manages relationships professionally. Responsible for working collaboratively across different disciplines.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Minimum of an undergraduate degree in science or engineering
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Working collaboratively with Engineering and project teams to achieve solutions. Capability to design innovative solutions to build effective products that meet customer requirements. Working in team to ensure high quality products are developed. Manages engineering projects or work packages. Controls creation of assembly and test instructions. Skilled at communicating with other engineering teams and team members. Excellent data analysis and problem solving skills. High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality and reliability. Excellent team player. Skilled user of Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint. Strong organisational skills to be able to produce project plans and work on multiple concurrent activities.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
PhD level degree or equivalent experience in a research environment in physics or natural sciences. High level of hands-on experience with design and test of high power fiber lasers, ideally at kilowatt power level. Specialist knowledge of the physics of fiber and/or bulk laser technology. Good understanding of optical, electronic and mechanical requirements for industrial reliability.
TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS
Up to 10 % annually, potentially globally.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Fluent in English. Capability of programming and modelling would be an advantage (Labview or Python).
