Job Overview

Parry Ward is looking for highly motivated and committed individuals to join the endocrinology team as a Junior Sister. This is an internal advert open to employees of the RUH only.

As a junior sister you will be expected to lead and manage the ward with the support of the senior sister, while developing your leadership and management skills. You will be welcomed by a dynamic and hard‑working team where development is a priority.

Parry Ward is a 28‑bed specialist endocrinology and general medicine ward caring for a variety of patients with many different conditions. The nursing team includes two nurse practitioners as well as specialist nurses and clinicians who support patient care and staff development.

You will have opportunities to build on and develop your leadership and management skills, leading by example and providing care of a high standard.


Main duties of the job

* Maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing incorporating the Named Nurse initiative.
* Proactively co‑ordinate the patient’s discharge arrangements in accordance with RUH Discharge Policy, ensuring involvement of other agencies as necessary.
* Promote a patient‑focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
* Promote and maintain effective communication within the ward/department, GPs and community staff and other hospitals with regard to ongoing patient care.
* Educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
* Supervise junior staff in the delivery of care, through effective monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
* Demonstrate effective budgeting practice, exercising care and economy, supported by appropriate documentation.
* Develop partnerships with Finance & HR department and divisional management teams, gaining an understanding of resource management processes and having representation in service development issues.


Essential criteria

* Regular experience of taking charge and delegating duties, and problem‑solving throughout shifts; minimum 2 years relevant clinical experience at Band 5.
* Understanding of the basic principles of effective budgetary management and staff management.
* Demonstrated well‑developed clinical practice; prioritises own workload and that of others appropriately; acts as an advocate to service users.
* Commitment to professional development; ability to educate others; audit and quality improvement experience.
* Effective verbal and written communication with staff, patients and relatives, tailoring communication to the person addressed.


Desirable criteria

* Experience supervising Registered Nurses, HCAs and students through monitoring, feedback, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
* Previous Band 6 experience; training in management/HR; diploma or degree in a relevant area.
