Summary: The Fiber Construction Engineer (FCE) is responsible for managing the initial design, including obtaining local and state permits, pole and conduit license requests. The FCE oversees project and budget management, ensuring compliance with FirstLight’s high standards. They will manage project materials from request to completion and oversee construction activities with in-house or external resources. The role requires managing multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to timelines, budgets, quality, and safety standards. This position supports field design, installation, and support of the fiber optic network, with work primarily from a home office and some fieldwork, including site walks and pole data collection.
Responsibilities:
* Travel to customer locations to gather fiber optic project information, determine equipment needs, and identify optimal routes.
* Prepare preliminary Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) designs, providing necessary data for Fiber Engineering.
* Complete Method of Procedure (MOP) forms, including customer signatures, to authorize fiber installation.
* Participate in meetings to discuss new backbone, lateral, and riser fiber builds.
* Establish partnerships with stakeholders for project updates and accurate forecasting.
* Develop strategic customer relationships to secure service contracts.
* Engage in all construction phases, including bidding, assessments, site visits, safety audits, and documentation.
* Work closely with fiber design engineers to ensure consistency and accuracy in documentation.
* Manage construction activities with contractors to meet project specifications and delivery timelines.
* Keep Team and Project Managers informed of any issues affecting timelines or budgets.
* Promote open communication within the team to ensure successful project outcomes.
* Oversee procurement and organization of equipment and materials.
* Develop expertise in creating accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
* Review contractor work and address issues as needed.
* Participate in meetings and calls for new projects and delivery expectations.
* Conduct site inspections to identify discrepancies and ensure efficient material use.
* Follow all field activity protocols and safety practices.
* Respond to fiber impairments as part of an On-Call rotation, coordinating with NOC, Field Operations, and Fiber Design teams.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
We seek an experienced Fiber Construction Engineer with strong knowledge of inside and outside fiber networks, initial design, and construction. The candidate should have at least 2 years of industry experience and a proven track record in fiber installations, capable of managing multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Requirements:
* Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering or telecommunications, or 5 years of relevant experience.
* Equivalent combinations of education and experience considered.
* Strong business acumen and experience managing large telecom construction projects.
* Extensive knowledge of fiber construction, splicing, testing, and best practices.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build stakeholder relationships.
* Proficiency with GIS, MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint), and ability to travel as needed, including overnight stays.
