Within the wider Specialist Teams for Learning Disabilities (STLD) framework, there are three specialist services:
The post holder will work across the Mental Health in Learning Disability Team and the Learning Disability Epilepsy Service, undertaking clinical assessments of patients presenting with mental health conditions and/or seizure disorders. These services typically manage individuals with long‑term, complex, treatment‑resistant, or relapsing conditions. The role offers an opportunity to develop expertise in a neurodevelopmental approach to assessment and treatment, with a strong emphasis on clinical skills. While pharmacological interventions are central to care, psychosocial interventions also play an important supportive role.
Under the supervision of a clinical supervisor, the post holder will use assessment findings to guide effective patient management, including prescribing pharmacological and psychosocial treatments and making timely referrals to other professionals. The role also includes managing urgent and emergency cases, including assessing patients presenting with self‑harm – potentially up to six cases within the first six months – some referred from A‑E or Princess Royal University Hospital, and others during on‑call duties, ensuring all assessments meet required timelines.
