1. We are looking for an experienced and driven Senior Civil Design Engineer to lead the delivery of civil engineering design for high-voltage substation projects across the UK. You will be instrumental in shaping the civil infrastructure for SSE and ScottishPower transmission and distribution networks, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with industry standards.
This is a strategic role offering the opportunity to influence major energy infrastructure projects and mentor junior engineers, while contributing to the UK's net-zero ambitions. Key Responsibilities
2. Lead the civil and structural design of AIS and GIS substations from feasibility through to detailed design and construction support.
3. Act as technical authority on civil design matters, ensuring alignment with SSE and ScottishPower specifications and UK regulatory frameworks.
4. Oversee the preparation and review of design documentation, including drawings, calculations, and technical reports.
5. Provide design assurance, risk management, and value engineering input across multiple projects.
6. Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and contractors to ensure smooth project delivery and resolve complex technical challenges.
7. Support bid development, project planning, and resource management.
8. Mentor and guide junior engineers and contribute to internal knowledge sharing. Requirements
9. Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (MEng preferred).
10. Substantial experience in substation civil design within the Transmission & Distribution sector.
11. In-depth knowledge of SSE and ScottishPower design standards, as well as UK codes and regulations (e.g., BS EN, CDM).
12. Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, STAAD.Pro, and familiarity with BIM workflows.
13. Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
14. Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver under tight deadlines. Desirable
15. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with ICE or IStructE.
16. Experience with complex foundation design, retaining structures, and drainage systems.
17. Familiarity with National Grid TP documents and other DNO/ TO standards.
