The General Surgery Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary offers acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated band 3 Health Care Support Worker to join the nursing team within Ward 65, a busy surgical unit that requires an individual who thrives in a fast‑paced environment.
Duration, Location and Working Pattern
* This is a permanent post working 36 hours per week.
* Shift pattern is rotational, consisting of a mixture of early, late and 12‑hour shifts.
* Based within the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Key Responsibilities
Support the delivery of patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, assisting with admission, transfer and discharge processes in line with procedures.
Monitor and record vital signs (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, temperature), reporting any changes or concerns in a patient’s condition promptly to the nurse in charge.
Assist with basic wound care, dressing application and minor procedures such as urinalysis and specimen collection.
Provide support with personal care, including hygiene, nutrition, hydration and safe patient repositioning, always maintaining dignity and comfort.
Help maintain a clean, safe and well‑stocked clinical environment, reporting any faults or concerns and assisting with the safe management of patients’ personal belongings.
Contribute to accurate patient documentation, including charts and records, and ensure compliance with all Health and Safety policies, including infection control, COSHH, fire safety and manual handling.
Qualifications, Training and Experience
* Must hold SVQ level 2 or be willing to complete it within the first year of employment and have relevant experience in a caring environment.
* Required to achieve the mandatory induction standards for Health Care Support Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout employment.
