Position

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Stoma Care within our Surgical department based at University Hospital Ayr, reporting to the SCN in station 2.


Hours

30 hours per week. Monday to Friday.

This post is offered on a secondment basis for 12 months.

From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full‑time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part‑time staff) without loss of earnings.


UK Driving Licence

A UK driving licence is essential for this role.


What You Will Do

The Stoma Care Service is dedicated to delivering expert, compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing stoma‑forming surgery for a wide range of malignant and non‑malignant conditions. Across NHS Ayrshire & Arran, we ensure every patient receives high‑quality, person‑centred support throughout their journey.

* Leading with expertise – Designing and implementing individualised care plans for patients with a stoma.
* Providing continuity of care – Offering follow‑up for at least one year post‑surgery, with patients able to self‑refer back into the service at any time.
* Managing a varied caseload – Including referrals from consultants, GPs, district nurses, ward teams, nursing homes, and social care professionals.

Beyond clinical care, you’ll inspire and educate others by teaching, supervising, and supporting patients, families, carers, student nurses, nursing staff, and junior medical staff. You’ll also play a key role in delivering educational programmes and driving continuous quality improvement within stoma services.

Knowledge, Training And/or Experience Required For This Post

* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
* Postgraduate qualification in stoma care or willingness to work towards this.
* A broad range of post‑registration experience, demonstrating the skills and expertise required for this specialist role.
* Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with patients and colleagues.
* A clear commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
* Excellent clinical decision‑making skills and sound judgment in complex situations.
* Working knowledge of Acute Services policies, procedures, and governance frameworks.
* Strong IT and presentation skills, with the ability to produce clear, professional reports.
* Proven experience of multi‑disciplinary team working.
* Knowledge of local, regional, and national stoma care strategies.
