Job Title: Python Developer
Location: Hybrid – 3 days per week on-site (Welwyn Garden City on Mondays, London 2 days per week – non-negotiable)
Contract Type: 6-month contract
Start Date: ASAP
Rate: Competitive
Overview
We’re working with a major UK retailer to find a hands-on Python Developer for a 6-month engagement within their internal Security Engineering function. The team delivers secure tooling, platform enhancements, and automation capabilities to support engineering teams across the business.
This is a practical, delivery-focused role for someone who thrives in an environment where you build it, you own it. You’ll design and implement secure APIs and services using Python and Django REST Framework (DRF) — and take responsibility for running, iterating and improving what you deliver.
While the focus is back-end engineering, a good understanding of full-stack architecture is desirable, as some tools are developed for use by front-end teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Build secure, scalable APIs and services using Python and Django REST Framework
* Design and own solutions end-to-end — from development through to operation and support
* Collaborate with security, platform, and front-end engineers to develop internal tooling
* Embed security practices into everything you build
* Maintain high engineering standards through peer review, testing, and monitoring
* Drive continuous improvement through automation and iteration
Essential Skills & Experience
* Strong Python engineering background, with hands-on use of Django REST Framework
* Solid experience building, integrating, and maintaining REST APIs
* Confidence working in CI/CD environments with Git and containerisation (Docker)
* Exposure to security-first or DevOps/DevSecOps environments
* Comfortable taking full ownership of services and tooling in production
Desirable
* Experience supporting or building tooling for front-end teams (React, TypeScript, etc.)
* Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Ansible)
* Knowledge of Kubernetes or cloud-native environments
* Understanding of security protocols like OAuth2, SAML, and enterprise SSO
* DevSecOps experience embedding security into the development lifecycle
Working Pattern
This role has a fixed hybrid requirement of 3 days per week on-site:
* Welwyn Garden City on Mondays (mandatory)
* Central London two days per week
* Remaining days remote
* This arrangement is non-negotiable and essential for cross-team collaboration.
Why Join?
* Work on secure platform tooling in a modern DevSecOps-aligned environment
* Take ownership of what you build — from code to production
* Deliver meaningful services that support engineering and security at scale
* Join one of the UK’s most innovative and tech-driven retail organisations
