Our client is a rural community primary school situated in the village of Old Buckenham, Norfolk, which first opened in 1963. It is a joint Primary and Nursery School with extensive grounds, including two playgrounds, a wildlife area with pond, a large sports field, international arboretum, amphitheatre, tunnel and mound, adventure playground, and an outdoor learning area for young children.
The Role
The Caretaker reports to the Office Manager and is responsible for managing the security, maintenance, and availability of the school site, building, furniture, fittings, and equipment to ensure a safe and efficient environment. The role involves handling confidential information responsibly and complying with health and safety policies, including the Norfolk County Council Caretakers Code of Practice.
Specific Responsibilities
1. Open and lock up the school, maintaining security procedures.
2. Serve as a key holder and address minor security and safety issues.
3. Monitor and undertake cleaning duties as required.
4. Prepare the school premises and rooms, including managing heating and lighting.
5. Carry out porterage duties, such as setting up furniture and equipment for activities.
6. Perform basic DIY tasks at a competent handyman level.
7. Report major repairs to the Office Manager.
8. Interact courteously with staff, parents, pupils, and visitors.
9. Supervise contractors and deliveries.
10. Monitor stock levels and inform the line manager of needs.
11. Maintain awareness of health and safety practices, including COSHH regulations, and keep relevant records.
12. Be willing to undertake relevant training.
13. Attend meetings with the Schools Property Maintenance Adviser and assist in planning maintenance works, in collaboration with the Headteacher and Office Manager.
