Fabrication Manufacturing Engineer (12‑Month FTC)
Location: North West England
A defence engineering business in the North West is looking for an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to support a major armoured vehicle hull fabrication programme on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. This is a hands‑on role on the shop floor, driving process improvement, quality, and large capital investment projects within a heavy fabrication environment.
The opportunity
Lead and implement improvements to fabrication manufacturing processes, focusing on dimensional stability, repeatability and right‑first‑time build.
Be a visible, “hands‑on” presence on the shop floor, resolving build and quality issues and supporting operators and supervisors.
Develop and introduce automation where appropriate to improve efficiency, consistency and product quality.
Lead and support structured problem‑solving, lean and continuous improvement activities to reduce build hours per product and minimise waste.
Contribute manufacturing input to design (DfM), jigs and fixtures, and major capital projects for vehicle hull fabrication.
Own and maintain standard operating procedures, routings and standard times (SAP‑based planning environment).
Ensure EHS, quality and manufacturing standards are maintained at all times.
About you
Degree, HND or advanced apprenticeship in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent).
Strong background in fabrication manufacturing, ideally heavy steel structures, with a track record of delivering manufacturing excellence.
Confident working in complex industrial environments and leading cross‑functional shop‑floor initiatives.
Experience with SAP (planning, routings, BOMs) and an ability to read and interpret engineering and welding drawings, including GD&T.
Knowledge of welding of ferrous metals, jigs and fixtures, and practical problem‑solving techniques, ideally with exposure to automation and major capex projects.
3D CAD exposure (e.g. Creo or Solid Edge) is an advantage, as is experience working with external research or welding bodies.
Strong data‑driven mindset, using process data and cycle times to drive improvement, with good awareness of relevant H&S regulations.
What’s on offer
Competitive salary and benefits package including enhanced pension.
Shorter working day on Fridays.
Life assurance and company sick pay scheme that increases with service.
Additional holiday and long‑service recognition.
Wellbeing initiatives, Employee Assistance Programme and cycle‑to‑work scheme.
Free on‑site parking and EV charging.
This employer is supportive of applications from ex‑forces personnel, reservists and those with military backgrounds, and recognises transferable skills from defence and heavy engineering environments.
