Job Description
A national charity is seeking a Part-Time Assistant Accountant to join its small and collaborative finance team. This fully remote role offers the opportunity to contribute to the financial oversight of grant-funded programmes supporting organisations across the UK.
Working within a finance team of three, you will support the financial monitoring of projects and grants. The team structure includes a colleague overseeing supplier payments, another responsible for management accounts and reporting, and a projects specialist who manages more complex programmes. This role will primarily focus on supporting project-related financial activity.
Key Responsibilities
* Review quarterly actual spend reports submitted by funded organisations and compare these against approved budgets.
* Analyse and investigate variances and underspends, ensuring expenditure aligns with agreed funding parameters.
* Work through detailed Excel workbooks uploaded via the organisation's online platform, checking the accuracy and completeness of financial submissions.
* Prepare grant instalments once expenditure has been reviewed and approved.
* Carry out spot checks on funded organisations and liaise with them to resolve queries where required.
* Participate in weekly meetings with the programmes team, providing finance input where needed.
* Support project-based financial analysis and reporting, alongside ad hoc work related to programme funding.
This role focuses on project finance and financial analysis rather than management accounts or year-end processes.
About the Role
* Fully remote working, with two in-person team gatherings per year (attendance required).
* Occasional opportunities to visit partner organisations, though this is not essential.
* Work is heavily Excel-based, with minimal use of the accounting system (the organisation uses Xero).
* The role requires strong organisation and the ability to manage deadlines, particularly when quarterly reports are submitted.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will be an AAT-qualified finance professional with strong analytical skills and well-rounded finance experience.
You will:
* Have experience across varied finance responsibilities, demonstrating strong all-round accounting knowledge.
* Be comfortable working independently and managing your own workload.
* Possess strong Excel skills and the ability to review and analyse financial data.
* Be able to meet strict reporting deadlines and manage multiple project timelines.
* Demonstrate the ability to investigate variances and challenge financial information where necessary.
Previous charity sector experience is not essential.
