Job Title: Prescribing Clerk/Receptionist
Location: Furnace House Surgery, St. Andrews Road, Carmarthen, Dyfed, SA31 1EX
Reports to: Practice Manager/Deputy Practice Manager
Job Purpose: To provide a dual administrative and clinical support role within the GP practice, acting both as a frontline medical receptionist and as a prescribing clerk. This role ensures patients receive high-quality, timely access to prescriptions and care, while supporting the clinical team in the safe and effective management of medication and appointments.
Key Responsibilities
Prescribing Clerk Duties:
* Process repeat and acute prescription requests using clinical systems i.e. EMIS, or other systems used in NHS Wales, and check requests against patient records, medication reviews, and prescribing guidelines.
* Liaise with GPs, pharmacists, and clinical staff to clarify prescription queries or discrepancies.
* Maintain accurate records of prescriptions issued and actions taken.
* Ensure all prescriptions are handled according to local formulary and All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) guidance.
* Assist with prescription audits, medication switches, and cost-effective prescribing initiatives.
* Monitor and action clinical system inboxes/workflows related to medication.
* Respond professionally to prescription queries from patients, pharmacies, and care homes.
Medical Receptionist Duties:
* Greet patients at the front desk and manage telephone and online appointment requests in a courteous and efficient manner.
* Book, cancel, and reschedule appointments in line with practice protocols.
* Register new patients and update existing patient records accurately.
* Signpost patients to appropriate services i.e. GP, nurse, pharmacist, or external services following training and protocols.
* Handle sensitive patient information confidentially in accordance with GDPR and NHS Wales Information Governance policies.
* Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, including e-mails, results, and clinical documents.
* Support the clinical team by preparing clinics and ensuring notes, test results, and documents are ready in advance.
General Duties:
* Work as part of the wider practice team, supporting colleagues during busy periods or staff absences.
* Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
* Adhere to practice policies, procedures, and NHS Wales guidelines.
* Undertake training relevant to the role i.e. safeguarding, confidentiality, prescribing systems, customer service.
* Contribute to a positive and patient-centred culture within the practice.
Qualifications and Experience
Experience
Essential
* Strong IT and admin skills.
* Good written and verbal communication.
* Accuracy and attention to detail.
* Able to manage sensitive data confidentially.
* Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
Desirable
* Familiarity with EMIS, or Welsh GP systems.
* Knowledge of All Wales prescribing policies.
* Welsh language skills (spoken and/or written).
* Experience handling prescription queries.
Qualifications
Essential
* GCSE Grade 1 to C in English and Maths
Desirable
* Qualified to NVQ level 2 in pharmacy services
