Applicants are invited to apply for the post of 'Hand Therapist'.

This post will offer the post holder the opportunity to work as part of a Multidisciplinary specialist Hand team including Orthopaedic Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Advanced Nursing Specialists, Nursing staff, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

Referrals are received from Orthopaedics, Plastics, AED, First Contact Practitioners and GPs.We have a structured CPD and supervision program. You will receive direct supervision from a senior hand therapist.


Main duties of the job

The Team work as Hand Therapists bringing together the specialist techniques of occupational therapy (scar management, retraining, splinting and advice on activities of daily living) and physiotherapy (joint mobilisations, passive, active and resistive exercises and strengthening). Each person on the team has achieved competency in splinting, exercise provision and wound care to improve hand and wrist dysfunction in patients referred to the service.

Person specification


Experience

* Post-registration experience, including experience of working in hand therapy and the NHS.
* Experience of supervision of students/junior staff/ unregistered staff
* Experience of assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of hand therapy treatment programmes
* Experience of participating in clinical audit
* Experience in policy development
* Experience of developing innovative practice
* Experience of working in an MDT and across organisational and professional boundaries


Skills

* Report writing / Presentation skills
* Computer literate – ability to use Word/Excel/PowerPoint, etc.
* Experience of complex clinical reasoning skills and goal setting in hand therapy
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Organised approach to work with ability to prioritise and delegate
* Mentoring and advanced communication skills
* Excellent time management and organisation skills
* Proven skills in teaching individuals and small groups
* Evidence of reflective practice
* Proven evidence of change management skills


Knowledge

* Evidence of complex clinical reasoning skills and goal setting in hand therapy
* Knowledge & experience in management of Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedic & Rheumatological conditions
* Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
* Knowledge and understanding of application of relevant National Guidance both general and specialty related e.g. National Service Frameworks, NICE etc.
* Knowledge and understanding of the NHS national targets and priorities
* Knowledge and understanding of the needs of the hand therapy caseload (patients/service-users/staff)
* Skills in provision of splinting including fabrication of bespoke splints.
* Understanding of technology and Apps to support rehab
* Knowledge of change management processes


Qualifications

* Appropriate HCPC Registration (OT/Physiotherapist)
* Degree or equivalent qualification recognised by RCOT/CSP
* Relevant post graduate study in hand therapy or equivalent experience.
* Supporting Learning in Practice (SLIP) or equivalent experience supporting students in practice
* Evidence of current CPD
* Member of the British Association of Hand Therapists
* Post graduate qualification in hand therapy


Employer certification / accreditation badges

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
