Job Title: Controls Engineer
Location: Coventry (Hybrid – 2–3 days in the office)
Salary: £50,000 – £60,000
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent
The Company
A well-established engineering organisation delivering large-scale turnkey solutions across sectors including quarrying, aggregates and industrial design and build. The business specialises in designing, building and maintaining electrical and mechanical systems that support safe, efficient and sustainable production.
Working across complex industrial environments, the company integrates engineering design, project delivery and site support with a strong focus on automation, innovation and digitalisation.
The Role
We are looking for a Controls Engineer to join a multi-disciplinary engineering team delivering automation systems for large-scale industrial material handling projects.
This is a hands-on role where you will be involved across the full project lifecycle — from concept and design through to testing, installation, commissioning and final handover. You will work on PLC programming, SCADA development, hardware integration and on-site commissioning across a range of plant and OEM systems.
This role is hybrid, with 2–3 days per week based in the Coventry office, alongside UK-wide site work during project delivery phases.
Key Responsibilities
*
Specify, design and document automation and control systems across the full project lifecycle
*
Develop PLC and SCADA software using Siemens TIA Portal, WinCC and associated tools
*
Produce engineering documentation including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Software Design Specifications (SDS), IO lists, cause and effect documentation, test scripts and commissioning packs
*
Support control panel design activities including drawings, component selection and design risk inputs
*
Carry out Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) with clients and stakeholders
*
Support defect resolution and system optimisation during commissioning
*
Deliver on-site commissioning, testing and operator training
*
Provide clear backups and “as-left” documentation following project completion
*
Ensure systems comply with relevant safety and compliance standards including UKCA, CE and machinery safety regulations
This is a delivery-focused role requiring regular UK-wide site attendance, particularly during installation, commissioning and project handover stages.
Requirements
*
Degree or HND in Electrical, Electronic or Control Systems Engineering, or equivalent industry experience
*
Strong PLC programming experience using IEC (phone number removed) languages such as Ladder Logic, Function Block and Structured Text
*
Experience developing PLC software from scratch as well as modifying existing architectures
*
Strong experience with Siemens PLCs, SCADA and HMI systems (TIA Portal, WinCC)
*
Understanding of instrumentation and process control systems including pneumatic and hydraulic integrations
*
Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP and OPC UA
*
Practical commissioning experience on live industrial plant and automation systems
*
Ability to produce clear technical documentation and engineering work packs
*
Strong communication skills with the ability to work with clients, suppliers and internal teams
Desirable Skills
*
Experience within quarrying, aggregates or heavy industrial material handling environments
*
Exposure to additional PLC platforms such as GE, Rockwell or Mitsubishi
*
Functional safety awareness (e.g. ISO 13849 or IEC 61508)
*
Knowledge of OT cybersecurity, secure remote access and network segmentation
*
Experience integrating production or OEE data capture within control architectures
*
Chartered Engineer status or working towards it
*
Experience supporting functional safety validation and compliance with independent assessors
This is an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer to work on complex industrial automation projects within a collaborative engineering environment, with strong exposure to full project delivery and cutting-edge control technologies
