Our success comes from doing things differently. As we expand our Level 3 portfolio to Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQs), we are seeking a skilled and experienced Chief Examiner in the relevant AAQ subject area to take on strategic and operational leadership of our externally assessed AAQ qualifications at Level 3.
About the role
The Chief Examiner will provide expert oversight and leadership in the design, production, marking, awarding, and continuous improvement of externally assessed Level 3 AAQ qualifications. The postholder will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, consistency across assessment series, and effective standard-setting processes. They will also line manage a team of Examiners and work collaboratively with internal departments and stakeholders to uphold the validity and comparability of assessments.
We are looking for 1 Chief Examiner for our Level 3 AAQs for each of the following subject areas:
* Sport and Exercise Science
* Design, Engineer and Construction
* Health and Social Care
IT & Computing.
Key Responsibilities
Awarding Leadership and Compliance
* Oversee the development and final sign-off of valid, reliable and fair assessments for Level 3 AAQ qualifications.
* Ensure all assessment materials and marking schemes meet internal quality assurance standards, technical guidance, and Ofquals General Conditions of Recognition.
* Chair Question Paper Evaluation Committee (QPEC) meetings and Awarding meetings.
* Lead standardisation and grade boundary setting across assessments.
* Monitor comparability of assessment demand and performance across series and formats.
* Conduct and oversee item rating exercises (e.g., Angoff) and support post-results services.
* Develop and maintain a subject-specific assessment strategy in collaboration with the Assessment Development and Quality teams.

Team Leadership and Line Management
* Line manage Principal Examiners/Examiners, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and continuous professional development.
* Oversee the training and quality assurance of Markers and Assessment Associates.
* Provide subject-matter expertise and authoritative decision-making on escalated assessment issues.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
* Monitor assessment performance using qualitative and quantitative data, recommending improvements to support validity and reliability.
* Support investigations into suspected malpractice, marking discrepancies, and appeals.
* Evaluate and mitigate conflicts of interest within the team.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
* Act as Subject Expert in regulatory reviews, Ofqual audits, and centre inspections.
* Represent TQUK at relevant forums, panels, and events.
* Draft reports (e.g., Chief Examiner reports) and contribute to customer-facing communications.
Collaboration and Strategy
* Work in close collaboration with the Qualifications, Assessment, Exams & Operations, and Quality Assurance teams.
* Provide insights into curriculum reform, sector developments, and regulatory shifts to inform TQUK strategy.
Experience & Skills
Essential
* Significant subject expertise in relevant AAQ subject area (Level 3).
* Strong track record of assessment development, marking, or examining in relevant AAQ subject areas.
* In-depth understanding of Level 3 AAQ subject areas the regulatory environment.
* Proven experience in managing or leading examiner teams.
* Exceptional attention to detail and ability to interpret complex data.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Confidence chairing high-stakes meetings and decision-making.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and open to using e-technologies for collaboration.
Desirable
* Knowledge of recent reforms in the relevant AAQ subject area sector.
* Experience with digital assessment platforms.
* Familiarity with TQUKs product suite and awarding body operations.
