Currently, we are recruiting two Defendant Paralegals to join AXA's in-house Legal Services Unit (LSU) within AXA Retail.
LSU is AXA's internal legal department responsible for managing litigated claims for AXA and its policyholders. The role involves managing a portfolio of approximately 100 motor claims brought against AXA and/or its policyholders.
AXA promotes a flexible working environment, allowing our employees to balance home and office work effectively. The role requires at least 40% of working time away from home, including attendance at our Gloucester office, client visits, or industry events, with a transition to primarily office-based work from September 2025. Flexible working arrangements can be discussed during the hiring process.
What you'll be doing:
1. Handling a portfolio of litigated motor claims, defending proceedings to a high standard.
2. Negotiating claims involving damaged vehicles while controlling indemnity spend and claim lifecycle.
3. Coordinating and preparing statements and briefing counsel.
4. Providing commercially focused legal advice.
5. Contributing to departmental knowledge sharing and training initiatives.
6. Ensuring compliance with internal procedures and standards.

What you'll bring:
1. Law degree and/or litigation experience (desirable).
2. Good knowledge of the Road Traffic Act, Civil Procedure Rules, Hire/Credit Hire, and court procedures.
3. Ability to work independently with awareness of scope and authority.
4. Team-oriented with mentoring, coaching, and supervising experience.
5. Confident communicator capable of building relationships and influencing at all levels.
6. Strong organizational skills with a pragmatic, methodical approach, utilizing IT case management systems.
7. Courage to challenge norms, suggest solutions, and employ effective interviewing techniques.
8. Ability to manage complex, changing workloads under pressure while maintaining quality.
This role requires eligibility and authorization to work in the UK. Additionally, as an IDD-regulated position, the successful candidate will undergo periodic background screening every four years, with annual declarations in interim years.
