Consultant Microbiologist - NW England - Perm/Locum FTC
Triple West Medical has been appointed by an NHS Trust based in North West England to assist in recruiting a Consultant Microbiologist for a substantive position. The Trust is also open to considering a Locum Fixed Term Contract for a minimum of 12 months. There is an opportunity for the right candidate to serve as Clinical Lead and Deputy Director of IPC.

The advertised Consultant post in Infection (Medical Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) is full-time (10.4 programmed activities). This is a replacement role, sharing responsibilities with current Consultant Microbiologists, Specialists, and a Specialty Doctor. The appointee will collaborate closely with other consultants and aim to uphold high service standards. An ideal candidate would support the Medical Director, who also serves as the Trust DIPC, and potentially lead the department to establish a microbiology centre of excellence.
Brief Duties / Responsibilities
1. Liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, and GPs regarding diagnosis, management, and infection prevention.
2. Coordinate with Public Health England and the Health Protection Unit for infection management and notifiable disease reporting.
3. Work full-time with a job plan to be finalized within three months of employment.
4. Optionally, develop primary responsibilities in specific clinical areas based on expertise or interest.
5. Provide advice and interpret results of departmental tests.
6. Participate in weekly antimicrobial ward rounds and daily ICU ward rounds.
7. Implement and participate in ongoing medical and multidisciplinary clinical audits, including C.diff MDT, OPAT MDT, Orthopaedics MDT, and Endocarditis MDT.
8. Contribute to policies, procedures, and guidelines related to microbiology and other departments.
9. Collaborate with infection control nurses to manage infection control across the Trust.
10. Investigate infection control incidents, participate in root cause analyses, and implement action plans to reduce hospital-acquired infections.
11. Address decontamination issues as needed.
12. Manage the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Microbiology laboratory in accordance with UKAS standards, with technical support.
Our client is willing to issue Certificates of Sponsorship to suitably qualified overseas doctors. GMC registration and relevant experience are essential for this role.
