Primary Purpose of Position

The 4‑H Extension Agent is a professional educator who designs, implements, and evaluates comprehensive 4‑H programs that meet the needs of youth ages 5‑18 in Nash County. The agent leads a county‑wide 4‑H program, recruits and trains volunteers, supports 4‑H clubs, and provides opportunities for youth to participate in school‑based and community 4‑H activities. The role involves program planning, marketing, administration, and evaluation while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities

* Develop, implement, and evaluate a community‑based 4‑H program that includes project, special interest, after‑school, and in‑school activities.
* Plan, promote, and attend 4‑H residential camps, summer day camps, and events throughout the county to foster life‑skill development.
* Provide youth with opportunities to participate in district, state, and national events and programs.
* Recruit, develop, and train youth and adult volunteers who represent the county population, ensuring all client protection guidelines are met.
* Manage a county‑wide 4‑H advisory council comprising alumni, volunteer leaders, youth, and county representatives.
* Raise funds to support youth participation and volunteer development in local, district, state, and national events.
* Develop a marketing and recruiting program that attracts youth and volunteers from all sectors of the county.
* Maintain accurate records, ensuring compliance with local, state, and national regulations, including NC State University programming, financial management, and USDA‑NIFA and IRS guidelines.


Requirements and Preferences

Education and Experience

* Bachelor’s degree in child or youth development, family and consumer sciences, or a related discipline.
* At least 3 years of experience in youth or adult development, volunteer management, or program development is preferred.
* Completion of at least one half of a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
* Experience in grant writing and management is preferred.
* Valid North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire.

* Proficient computer literacy.
* Ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs.
* Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities.
* Team‑player attitude and willingness to work as part of a collaborative Extension team.
* Self‑directed with a strong work ethic and customer‑service orientation.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

* Related Master’s degree.
* Volunteer recruitment and development experience.
* Experience in program development and grant management.
* Strong demonstration of the ability to engage diverse youth populations.
* Willingness to travel for trainings and events, including overnight and weekend work.
