Director of Commercial Growth and Strategy
Reports to: Managing Director
Direct Reports: 9 Managers
Location: Inverness (with travel as required)
Hours: Full-time
Job Purpose
Our client, currently undergoing a significant cultural change, seeks to add a new role providing commercial leadership across sales, purchasing, category management, and retail operations. The Commercial Director will shape and execute company-wide strategies, develop high-performing teams, and drive growth across product categories and customer segments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Commercial Strategy & Business Growth
* Develop and lead a commercial strategy aligned with the company's long-term plan.
* Identify and pursue new business opportunities, markets, customer segments, and product innovations.
* Lead planning cycles including pricing, promotion, and product lifecycle decisions.
* Drive sales performance across teams, trade counters, and key accounts.
* Set and monitor sales targets, improving conversion and retention.
* Manage strategic accounts and pipeline development.
1. Retail, Inventory & Category Oversight
* Oversee category managers to optimize performance and supplier relations.
* Coordinate with Retail Director and Inventory Manager for branch performance and stock management.
* Maintain margin integrity through purchasing, pricing, and inventory control.
2. Cross-functional Alignment
* Partner with Marketing, Operations, Finance, and HR to meet commercial objectives.
* Provide insights on market trends, competitors, and customer behavior.
* Lead and develop team members through coaching and performance reviews.
* Foster a collaborative culture focused on customer experience and growth.
3. Reporting & Commercial Governance
* Manage sales forecasting, budgeting, and reporting.
* Report monthly on KPIs, risks, and opportunities.
* Ensure strategy alignment with business goals.
* Achieve revenue and margin growth, improve stock availability, and enhance supplier performance.
* Increase sales performance and employee engagement within the team.
* Align cross-departmentally with business development, operations, and marketing.
Measures of Success
* Revenue growth (overall and by category/region)
* Gross margin improvement and cost control
* Customer acquisition and retention metrics
* Stock turn and availability rates
* Sales target attainment by team/branch
* Supplier performance against negotiated terms
* Forecast accuracy and reporting compliance
Candidate Profile
* Proven senior leadership experience in distribution, trade, or B2B sectors
* Strong record of driving sales and growth
* Deep commercial understanding and cross-functional leadership skills
* Effective influencing, coaching, and communication abilities
* Knowledge of regional markets and rural customer needs
* Experience with industrial or technical products
* Background in retail operations or multi-location sales management
* Familiarity with CRM, ERP, and analytics tools
