Healthcare Assistant – Surgical Ward
Birmingham: The Harborne Hospital
Full time: Monday – Sunday, 37.5 hours per week
Shift times: Flexible to work long days, nights and weekends on internal rotation
Permanent Contract | Salary: Competitive (DOE) plus 9% shift allowance
The Harborne Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, is a state‑of‑the‑art £100 million, purpose‑built 50‑bed multi‑speciality private hospital. We are now seeking a dedicated and compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join our 12‑bedded multi‑speciality surgical ward, caring for patients undergoing procedures in GI, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Breast, Spinal, Liver and other surgical specialties. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that delivers outstanding patient care within a modern, supportive and clinically rich environment.
As a Healthcare Assistant on our surgical ward, you will play a vital role in supporting patients throughout their inpatient stay. Your responsibilities will include providing high‑quality personal care, assisting patients with daily activities such as washing, dressing, mobility and nutrition, and ensuring they feel safe, comfortable and supported at all times.
You will monitor and record observations under the supervision of registered nurses, support with preparing patients for surgery and recovery, maintain a clean and safe ward environment, assist with equipment and stock management, and contribute to the smooth running of the ward by responding promptly to patient needs.
You will also work closely with the nursing team to ensure that care plans are followed, patient dignity is upheld and communication with patients and their families is always warm, respectful and reassuring.

What you’ll bring
1. Acute hospital experience gained within the NHS or private healthcare sector
2. A recognised Healthcare Certificate or equivalent care qualification
3. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a fast‑paced surgical environment
4. Confidence in undertaking clinical observations accurately and safely
5. Competence in supporting patients with mobility and manual handling using safe techniques
6. A compassionate, patient‑centred approach with the ability to maintain dignity and respect at all times
7. A positive attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
