Key Responsibilities

Provide support to the multidisciplinary team in the provision of a high standard of direct patient care and carry out tasks and run clinics assigned to you.

* Maintain a professional appearance in line with the Trust professional appearance policy and infection control policy.
* Uphold the Trust’s values and behaviours and behave in a manner fitting with the responsibility this brings to maintain the public confidence.
* Maintain professional and courteous working relationships with staff, patients and families, respecting equality and diversity.
* Uphold the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the client group and respect equality and diversity of everyone at all times.
* Work collaboratively with others in the care setting to ensure that patients’ needs are met.
* Use social media as per Trust policy and procedures.
* Read and follow the Skills for Health Code of Conduct for Health Care – Support Workers and always maintain the confidentiality of patient information.
* Cover the duties of colleagues in posts of the same band or lower and within the range of the postholder’s knowledge and skills, ensuring patients are at the centre of every decision.
* As part of your employment with the Trust, you are bound by the policies and procedures within the organisation and the wider NHS.
* The core clinical skills competencies should be completed within 12 months of starting within the role as a Senior Health Care Support Worker.


Clinical and Personal Care Responsibilities

* Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse, midwife or Nursing Associate, participating fully in the delivery of planned nursing care, including chaperoning, escorting, transferring patients, providing one‑to‑one patient‑centred care and caring for patients undergoing procedures.
* Demonstrate own duties to new starters and supervise the work of student or junior colleagues, undertaking a buddying role for new Health Care Support Workers.
* Frequently encounter emotional or distressing events, such as breaking bad news.
* Order supplies under the direction of the nurse in charge.
* Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
* Participate in general cleanliness and tidiness of ward environment.
* Undertake mandatory training and role‑specific training relevant to the role.
* Record and escalate patient physiological observations.
* Provide person‑centred care, exchanging factual information with patients using a variety of methods to support understanding.
* Undertake personal care duties such as bathing, washing, mouth care, toileting, catheter care, dressing and assistance with meals and personal hygiene appearance.
* Assist patients with mobilising safely, including use of aids.
* Handle patients’ valuables in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
* Assist patients in meeting their individual religious, spiritual and cultural needs.
* Respect patients’ rights and choices as individuals.
* Maintain a safe, tidy and clean environment for staff, patients and relatives.


Procedures and Core Clinical Skills

* Prepare the environment for a clinical procedure, including preparation of a procedural trolley and assembling equipment following the procedural document and under the supervision of a registrant.
* Set up and assist nursing/medical staff in clinical procedures using aseptic technique once appropriate training has been given.
* Complete pre‑procedure checklist and decontaminate equipment post procedure.
* Caring for and monitoring patients during procedures, chaperoning patients during medical examinations and procedures.
* Ensure clinics are kept fully stocked.
* Deliver specimens, test requests and notes as required.
* Demonstrate knowledge of safe disposal of sharps and universal safety techniques for spillages.
* Undertake a range of core clinical skills, including:
o Patient observations (blood pressure, oxygen saturations, heart rate, height, BMI, respirations, temperature, pain score, NEWS).
o Obtain samples (urine dip, from catheter, MSU, faeces, sputum).
o Order tests on Cerner (MRSA, MC&S for samples).
o Blood glucose and ketone testing.
o ECG recording.
o Observe wounds and change simple dressings using aseptic/non‑touch technique, removing clips and sutures as directed.
o Bladder scan.
o Venepuncture & cannulation.
o Skin assessment.
o Urinary catheter insertion and removal.
o Urinalysis and pregnancy testing.
o Bone density scans in out‑patient setting.
o Undertaking quality assurance checks of machines used for point‑of‑care testing.
o Organise annual PAT testing for equipment.
o Spirometry.
o Ophthalmology measurements.
o Check top of resuscitation trolley daily.
o Participate in safety checks (ambient room and fridge temperature checks), performing appropriate action when readings are out of range and escalating when necessary.


Hours of Work

The Outpatients Department operates Monday‑Friday 08:30‑17:00. Successful candidates may be required to work staggered times in Musculo‑skeletal, Medical and Surgical clinics, with some roles requiring weekend shifts at multiple sites. Probation lasts six months.
