Histopathology Specialty Doctor

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Specialty Doctor to work in the Histopathology/Cellular Pathology Departments at North Tyneside General Hospital.

There are at present 5 Consultant Histopathologists, 2 Speciality Doctors and one retired consultant on the bank within the department based at North Tyneside General Hospital. The department has full UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accreditation.

The histology workload amounts to approximately 23,000 requests per year and covers a broad range of medical and surgical specialties (excluding neuropathology and renal biopsies). A full range of special stains is available and immunocytochemistry staining is fully automated with a wide range of antibodies available. There are approximately 2500 non-gynae cases received annually, comprising fine needle aspirates from most sites with the usual range of brushings and washings from the bronchus, FNA breast, thyroid, pleural, peritoneal washings, bile duct brushings and urine samples.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be encouraged to gradually undertake the full range of pathologist duties involved in the delivery of the histopathology/cytology provision - including opening of specimens, cutting up and reporting of the range of biopsies and resections (GI, Breast, Gynae, Skin, Urology, lung) as well as non-gynae cytology. These will be under supervision to begin with and gradually progressing to independent levels. The candidates will also be fully supported to achieve CESR by rotating them to relevant specialties if needed at local neighbouring Trusts.

The post holder must have an empathetic and sensitive approach to patients' needs with an ability to show concern for others recognising individual work-life needs.

Demonstrate highly effective communication skills with an ability to influence and negotiate and use power appropriately within the organisation. Be an approachable team member who is inclusive, co-operative, caring and a good listener who acts appropriately where necessary on what is being said.

Manage the boundaries appropriately within the team showing loyalty through development of a positive and responsible approach to lessons learnt in team errors.

Job responsibilities

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is committed to assisting all employees to achieve a work-life balance. The Job Plan will typically include an average of 9.0 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care duties and 1.0 Programmed Activity for Supporting Professional Activities.


Person Specification


Qualifications and Experience

* Full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC)
* Shall have completed at least four years' fulltime postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in histopathology or as a fixed-term specialty trainee in a histopathology
* Shall have FRCPath part 2 or European equivalent and also should have at least 6 months experience in Cellular Pathology in the UK
* The appointee will be required to maintain full GMC registration and revalidation and should follow the GMC Code of Good Medical Practice
* Experience of, and commitment to, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
* Experience of Audit Management
* Experience of teaching
* Formal training in Clinical Supervision/train the trainers
* Experience of coronial post mortem work and willingness to participate in an autopsy rota
